2004 Chevy Cavalier that cranks but won't start...?

It's a 2004, Chevy Cavalier with 2.2 Ecotech. The motor turns over like it wants to start but it won't start. It has sat for over a day and when I went to try and start it it almost started. Anyone have any clue as to what the problem could be?

Update:

The fuses and relays are good.

We think it needs a new fuel pump, as when you turn the ignition on you can't hear the pump.

if you can't hear the fuel pump running, then try beating on the bottom of the gas tank with a rubber mallet or your fist. Sometimes you can get a bad fuel pump to start back up from jarring when beating on the tank. If it starts back up, most likely you will need a new fuel pump but in the process of replacing the fuel pump, you need to be looking for any loose connections or bad grounds. If you want to make sure it's the fuel pump, or at least lack of fuel to the engine, you can remove the air intake hose from the air filter housing or directly from the throttle body and spray some sort of flammable liquid such as starting fluid(ether) or carb cleaner, then try to start the engine. If it starts up then stalls out, you know you are not getting any fuel to the engine.

It's the fuel pump, I had a 05 do the same thing. Not to hard to replace, but a little expensive. The pump is in the tank. Like was said earlier, you can take a rubber mallet and hit the bottom of the tank, could be a bit of dirt or rust stopping the pump, could free it.

in my experience some newer cars flood themselves if they sit for a while especially after repeated start attempts when you try to start it putsh the gas pedal all the way to the floor as your cranking it and don't stop cranking til it puffs out a bunch of black smoke as it starts
