Morning Sickness: Duration?
I am 8 weeks pregnant and have recently starting experiencing morning sickness. I have not been vomitting but I cannot even watch others eat, let alone eat a full meal for myself. How long does this typically last for most women? Is it harmful to my baby that I am losing weight because I am eating so little?

I had morning sickness with both of my kids and it lasted the whole pregnancy. I would mention the losing weight part to your doctor. The baby usually gets all the nutrients before the mom does. Also, if you are taking vitamins, that will help too. Both of my kids are really healthy. You should try crackers or sucking on some popsicles or hard candy. That always seemed to help me.

At 7 weeks I began to lose weight and quickly returned to pre-pregnancy weight... I'd only vomited once but had almost continual dry-heaves. I was very frustrated b/c I was SO hungry! My OB put me on Diclectin (~$100/ 20 days) 4 pills a day. It made a huge difference. I'm still on it at 11 weeks and am right on track regarding weight (I was out the other day and spontaneously puked in a restaurant... my second vomiting incident. I got more the next day). It has made me much sleepier, and I did have dry heaves when I opened the garbage can the morning after we had fish; but I'm eating and keeping it down.
Most woman only have severe nausea in the first trimester, but some women have it the entire pregnancy. We're all unique. Sorry.
If your not eating digesting the food, your baby is leaching the things it needs out of your blood and bones, thereby weakening both your system and increasing the risk for its future. Don't take anything over the counter until you've talked to your doctor.

This is just the start of it for you. It depends on the woman but I started at 8 weeks and it lasted until 14 weeks with me. I was sick though and lost 25 pounds. Babys in the first trimester, don't feed off of the food you eat but have a ylk sac that feeds them. The first trimester all of your food is going into making a healthy placenta. Eat small meals or snakc all day, that will help but you don't need to be concerned unless your doctor is worried.

It's not harmful to your baby, but if you can't keep anything at all down, let your doctor know. Try to eat saltine crackers and ice chips, it tends to help with nausea.
My morning sickness lasted 24/7 for the first 4 1/2 months of my pregnancy. I lost 16lbs before I started to gain weight, but my baby didn't suffer from it. She was born at 33 weeks gestation because I was diagnosed with preeclampsia (pregnancy induced hypertension - high blood pressure) and she weighed a whopping 4lbs 12oz and was 18 inches long!!
I hope you start to feel better soon. I know it sucks, but that's part of pregnancy for some women!
