Mystery Allergic Reaction?

My coworker just had another allergic reaction, and we cant figure it out! Yesterday, at the same exact time, she swelled up, got rashes all over her arms, and then fainted. At the hospital they gave her benadryl, and she seemed okay this morning. All of a sudden it acted up again, and she left before it got too bad. She doesn't take medications, didn't eat any food today as a precaution, and has never had reactions like this before. What on earth coudl it be? Why the same time twice a day? We're in an office setting with just computers and paper, etc.

Update:

Thank you!

Some people are allergic to things they eat every day and don't even know it until the symptoms become severe. Some people can even go into anaphylactic shock before they realize they have a serious allergy. For people who are allergic to peanuts for instance, or even sulfates, simply being in the same room with those substances can cause a severe allergic reaction. They don't even have to touch them or consume them. They may not even know they are there. Improperly cleaned cooking utensils can be a source of cross contamination.... or simply shaking hands with someone who just ate something you are severely allergic to. If she is allergic to peanuts, and drinks coffee with an imitation dairy creamer, check the ingredients on the label. There might be something she is allergic to in the ingredients. Until you find out the source of her allergic reaction, it might be a good idea to have Benadryl on hand every day at work. The store and generic brands are cheaper and work just as well also. She could also be having another reaction to what she was exposed to yesterday even after bringing it under control with Benadryl and not necessarily have been exposed to the same substance again. This type of secondary reaction can occur from 8 hours to 72 hours after the exposure to whatever she is allergic to. She needs to see an allergist to find out for sure what she may be allergic to. Allergic reactions can be deadly and death can occur in as little as 5 to 15 minutes from the time of exposure.

Once an allergist determines she has a severe allergy to an allergen, he/she can prescribe an EpiPen injector for emergency treatment of anaphylaxis which can buy some much needed time to get to an emergency room for treatment.

Source(s): Lost a high school friend from anaphylactic shock at a party. She was allergic to seafood and told that there would be no seafood at the party. Unfortunately, there had been cross contamination in the food prepared with utensils that had been in contact with seafood. She died within 15 minutes before the ambulance could even arrive and never actually came in direct contact with seafood. Also have relatives with severe food allergies...

Maybe something you work around or in your office like latex. She should get a test that sounds serious.

*Also, regardless if she's never been allergic before, people can build an allergy sometimes.

  • She is allergic to work or cleaning products
