Why Parables?

A question for fellow Christians to chew on.

Why did Jesus speak in parables? This should be interesting.

Update:

No, He spoke in parables so that the unbelievers couldn't understand Him.

Matthew 13

11He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

12For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

13Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

14And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

15For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

The reason why Jesus Christ gave parables, was so that his 12 apostles could understand matters pertaining to God's kingdom, while at the same time keeping these things purposely hidden from outsiders who would have no appreciation for spiritual matters !

Ps 78:2 I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter hidden things, things from of old—

Mt 13:10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” 11 He replied, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven y has been given to you, but not to them.

Who understands the parables? I mean really understands the parables? only those who truly believe. to those who do not it is just follishness.

Parables were common in Judaism. They're meant to invoke thought and their symbology makes them easier to remember.

btw, I am not a Christian.

edit- Ahh... I hadn't thought of that. I just knew the Jews used parables a lot.

  • To talk in terms that people could comprehend easier... Like when you go to a doctor or lawyer and they use all those big words technical words and you leave not knowing half of what they said. Jesus wanted them and us to understand without a doubt what He meant .
