Do you understand how the American government works?

The idea of the original Boston Tea Party was "no taxation without representation." You HAVE representation.

If you don't want a carbon tax, write to your congressmen. The President doesn't make laws.

Both candidates support cap&trade, unfortunately. I just hope there are enogh republican senators to fillibuster that idiot idea.

It's the cap & trade idea that bothers me. cap & trade would require someone to decide who has to pay and how much. A great boost in bureaurocracy, with potential for favoritism, bribery, and politicised decisions about energy use- vital to our economy. a lot of the proceeds would go to traders & speculators, like algore. kind of like the widely hated "tax farmers" of old.

a carbon tax (on each unit of energy produced) would at least be fairer, and simpler to administer. It would encourage conservation. Our government needs to tax something.

Payroll tax's may become unworkable- especially Social security and medicare ( which add 15.2% to the cost of each employee, even the poorest) These tax's will need to be increased, and retirement age increased, too. It's more of a Ponzi scheme, than a retirement plan -ever increasing payments will be needed. Expect that people will not want to pay in - and increasingly prefer to work under the table, or barter, or stay home and garden. anything to avoid a rip-off.

Our protest should take the form of voting against the idiots who created and defend the S.S. ponzi scheme & then used the money to finance the government, replacing it with IOUs (called treasury bonds). And those who represent the interests of government employees, welfare cases, and envirofanatics and their attorneys who are destroying our economy, by suing one business after another out of existence. In other words, vote against everyone with a (D) alongside their name.

Bush has spent money like a drunken sailor, too. But national defense is a legitimate function of government. Spending is usually a democrat thing - subsidies for one favored group or another.

The way I understand the tax, this isn't something the average citizen would have to pay for, it would be companies that exceed the pollution levels that would be set.

Why would anyone want to protest something that would make companies reduce pollution. There are many cost effective ways to reduce pollution caused by most manufacturing processes. There just hasn't been a financial incentive for companies to take action.

Due to consumer demand for more earth friendly practices several companies have taken actions to reduce their impact on the earth. As more consumers become aware and demand increases for "Greener Practices" companies will need to clean up their act or lose revenue to companies willing to make the change. This tax, just lets the companies know that enough consumers are putting pressure on the Government and it's time to change.

"Why would anyone want to protest something that would make companies reduce pollution."

Perhaps because any cost associated with that will be passed on to us. Just like a windfall profit tax..you think Exxon will pay more? They will just pass the tax onto us.

    YES!!!!!

It'll never happen in Boston though. Unfortunately, things have changed dramatically here in two centuries. If these people were around in the 1770s, they'd tell us it took the monarchy to raise a child.

I am in. Excellent idea. I say we burn Al Gore's jet up and maybe his mansion. Wait bad idea. That would ultimately reduce the carbon released. Being that he should be labeled a carbon criminal by his own followers.

    Sounds pretty good to me.

It is amazing that we had a revolution over a much lower level of taxation than we have today but yet we stand idly by while politicians scurry around trying to scrounge up an ever widening tax base while forgetting that it is our money that they are removing from the economy and hampering productive use of our resources.

What is happening to the concept of freedom in our society?

It is not a partisan issue

McCain and Obama advocate a cap-and-trade system which is different from a carbon tax.

For your info: SUCH A SYSTEM ALREADY EXISTS IN THE US FOR NOx and SOx EMISSIONS.... why did you not protest already earlier against them???
