Can you use 100% cotton in rag quilts?

I know you can use denim and flannel but does the quilting fabric work also? Will it fray right?

you can use it. look for cotton fabric that has a woven in design. printed on designs (you can tell by looking at the reverse...if there is no pattern on the back it is printed on) this fabric usually isn't straight and will fray all goofy. close to the edge of the piece of fabric pull out 5-6 threads of fabric (right next to each other).....this will determine your grain and how straight your fabric is and where you should cut your pieces. also the higher the quality of the fabric (not the wal-mart kind) the higher the thread count the less problems you will encounter. make sure you wash and dry all your new fabric first in hot water so you don't have shrinkage when the quilt is together. hope this helps!
