How can I connect 2 computers with USB ports?
I wrote about 2 Gateway computers that I want to connect. The answers I got told me that I needed an ethernet/cat 5 cable. I had an extra one but the older Gateway doesn't have a port for an ethernet cable. It has phone line and USB ports. I want to use the files in the older computer. Any suggestions?
My original question had more info....these are 2 Gateways, one is about 4 years old the other is older...these are not laptops. The newer model is hooked up to a wireless router (only ethernet port). The older model does not have any ethernet ports and is not wireless capable. I want to use the file on the older model without setting up another monitor and keyboard. Can I do this with the USB ports?

There are numerous options for getting the data off the old Laptop.
1) Use a Pen Drive. These are USB devices that are basically a memory stick. Just plug it in and copy your files. Then move it to the new laptop and write the files.
2) Hard Drive Enclosure. You can purchase an enclosure and then remove the hard drive from the old laptop and put it in the enclosure. The enclosure will then allow you to connect the hard drive to the new PC via USB.
3) Ethernet PCMCIA card. This is a thin card that slides into your laptop. It provides a Cat5 connections to you can connect the two laptops. Check www.newegg.com for one of these.
4) Network the laptops. If you have a wireless router and both laptops are wireless enabled, then connect them to your wireless network and simply copy files wirelessly. You will need to turn on File Sharing, but this is easy to do.

You have 3 ways of doing this.
-USB to USB
The last time I have seen this cable was Radio Shack. It required some software.
-Ethernet/Cat 5 cable
You need what is called a cross connect cable. They make them for the XBox that can be found at Best Buy. If you know anyone that can make.
-WiFi
After connecting your WiFi setup an Adhock making on of you computers a connections point. You might need to share the drive also.

You can use USB, but you need a special cable that has identical ends. They're a bit pricey and the process can be a bit tricky. Your best bet (and easiest) is to get an ethernet "crossover" cable and connect the two in a peer-to-peer network. It's cheaper, and you have wizards to walk you through it. Much easier as well.

You should either put your old computers hard drive in a enclosure so you can get your files or put the hard drive in the newer computer so you can access your files from your newer computer.
