Does anyone else think they need to rethink the Home Run Derby?

I mean Josh Hamilton hits 28 home runs in the 1st round and loses in the finals to a guy that didn't hit as many home runs in 3 rounds that Hamilton did in 1 round. I mean you can even see the look on Morneau's face like he didn't deserve to be getting that award. I think it needs to be an all out total number of home runs hit in rounds 1 through 3.

yeah no one will remember who won this year because it was all about Hamilton with 28 HR in the first round. they should have given it to him.

While I think that would give the deserving performer the win, it could potentially make it very boring.

Situation: What if, someday, someone hits 30 homers in the first round. All the other competitors only hit a max of ten for the first round. After the first round, there's still an hour of the Derby left, and we would already know the winner. It would be little point to watch after that, or from the competitor's view, to compete, knowing you basically lost.

The way it is now, players(Morneau) have to pace themselves throughout the whole thing, instead of using up their energy early(Hamilton).

Hamilton should have been smart enough to stop in round one earlier than he did. You know that the shots carry over from round to round. The next person on the list after round one was 8 homers. Assuming he repeats in round 2, he has 16. Why hit 28? Stop at 17 or 18 and save something for the finals. He performed poorly in the final round because of fatigue.

No. The Homerun King is and will always be the most consistent slugger. Were you watching ESPN like 5 Minutes before the Derby had started? All of the commentators agreed that the Trophy will go the most consistent hitter. Josh Hamilton went ALL OUT. Shooting a ball 518 Feet is no easy task, its gonna tire you out. Josh had gotten tired because of his early rampage. Now that he has this experience and valuable knowledge he will do better the upcoming HRD's that are coming his way (And trust me, they are gonna be quite a few!)

They need to have a different system than the one in place now. I knew after 28 homeruns he would be tired when the third round came up.

Why not just have 1 round then?

Was it fair in 2006 when the Cardinals won the World Series when they had less wins in the regular and post season combined than the Tigers did in the regular season alone?

  • Yeah it should be a total number, it should be all about slugging home runs but if a guy wants to try to hit as many as he wants when it doesnt really count toward winning, thats his choice, its more fun if they do anyway

I totally agree with you even though it means that it could be a total blowout The guy with the most total homeruns deserves the title.
