It does cost more, depending on your service provider. But it's still cheap..

Most mobile phones in USA are CDMA technology based phones and either they do not have texting (sending SMS) facility or they can not send text messages to GSM based phones. Thailand (and for that matter complete Asia) is having GSM technology based mobile phones. So the basic problem.

If you are having GSM mobile phone in the USA, you can always send text message to Thailand or any where else.

Last year I was in the USA and I purchased a very cheap prepaid GSM mobile phone of AT&T and I was able to send text messages to my girl friend in Thailand. Normal texting charges for USA were 1 cent per text message of 160 characters where as for Thailand it was 5 cents per message.

I do know that I can send an email to my brother's cell phone when I am in Thailand and he is in the US. He can use his cell phone to send a message to my email address too! The price he pays for that email is the same as his text msg. (His carrier is Virgin Mobil in the US.)

Check with your phone service provider to see if there is a difference in domestic and international SMS rates? Since you live in the USA, I bet the rate to send an international SMS is higher than the domestic rate.

it depend on your service provider but you will be charge more than local text message , I text my girl everyday from Singapore but it still much more cheaper than IDD call.
