Sprucing up store bought spaghetti sauce?

What kind of seasonings do you like to use to make the store bought stuff yummy? I add ground beef, usually some Oregano, garlic salt, onion salt, and dried onions. Other stuff too, but not as much. Somehow, I can't get it half as good as my husband (he's a genius in the kitchen). Just wanted to know other people's preferences. Thanks!

I like to add a heaping Tablespoon of grated parmesan cheese to the jar of sauce while heating the sauce.

Naturally more goes on at the table.

It really does wake it up.

Depending on what brand sauce you have bought, and I generally buy the cheapest stuff they have if I don't have time for my own.

I have no use for garlic salt, but I would add a few cloves of crushed garlic, some fresh ground black pepper, some thyme, basil and dried oregano. Then I would mince about half an onion, fresh of course, and add that. Add your dried ingredients towards the end of the cooking time so they do not impart a bitter flavor. At the very end, finish your sauce with about 2 tablespoons of butter.

I do both, store bought and from scratch depending on how much time I have.

Never mix spices into spaghetti sauce that are used in mexican food. Be careful to use italian style seasonings.

My general rule of thumb comes from an old song from Simon and Garfunkel in the 60's.

If you follow the songs lyrics you see exactly the basic combination of:

    Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.

Then add garlic or garlic powder, diced onions chopped fine or dried onion flakes and a dash or olive oil for the base sauce.

Then you have the option of adding these items one or a few but not all (too much of a good thing can ruin it):

    1. sausage

    2. ground meat (beef, turkey, pork)

    3. red peppers, green peppers, yellow peppers (diced)

    4. olives

    5. mushrooms

    6. hard cheese grated (add at end of simmer)

    7. diced tomatoes and or marinara or paste

    8. pepper (salt if you prefer)

    9. dash of worcheister sauce

Remember not to add too many items or it can over whelm the sauce. Plus simmer well. The longer you simmer the better on low heat covered. You may need to add water on occasion so it does not get too thick.

    Bon Apettite.....

For me if the storebought sauce contains corn syrup or sweetners it just can't be fixed. But I like a brand called MOM's I think that is great as is. The ones that contain eggplant or artichokes are yummy and I like to add ground beef and a little extra garlic and herbs. Oh and a teaspoon or two of the liquid from green olives it wonderful, I like the green olives too, just not too many. I had a friend that added Polish sausage or Kielbasa to it and oh my gosh that was heaven.

I add ground turkey, chopped celery, red peppers, crushed garlic, onions, basil, oregano and - occasionally, fennel seeds. If the sauce seems sour, I add a small bit of brown sugar. Some grated cheese (even the cheap stuff) helps too.

I buy the Prego spaghetti sauce (traditional) and add ground beef, a small can of mushrooms, onions, fresh cut up tomatoes, fresh garlic. Then let it simmer according to the directions on jar.

I rarely buy storebought, but you can also add a small can of tomato PASTE .... I like LOTS of fresh herbs: oregano, basil, and several sprigs of fresh rosemary - lots of garlic & onions (fresh, not dried). You could also add some chopped bell peppers and a dash or 2 of balsamic vinegar......

Sometimes I do that too, but most everyone likes my homemade sauce better, but my homemade one takes hours to cook.

I wish you'd told us what facilities you have to cook and store the food! But since I'm guessing, here's my list, assuming you have a stovetop and refrigerator. Breakfast Day 1: Bacon (microwaved or fried - if microwaved just bring along a paper plate and paper towels), Eggs (could also be microwaved - bring along a microwave egg bowl or a regular bowl with some margarine/cooking spray works great), and toast with jelly/jam. Don't forget to bring some good breakfast drinks, like orange juice, flavored milk, or apple juice. Day 2: Spruce up frozen waffles with fresh fruit/jam/jelly and some little sausages on the side. All it takes is a toaster and the microwave. Day 3: Omelette, made on stovetop or in the microwave. Bring along eggs, shredded cheese, and any favorite meat (ham works great), veggies (pre-sliced onions or green peppers are favorites) and mushrooms, if desired. A yogurt drink is a great addition. Day 4: Layer yogurt (flavored or plain) with fresh fruit or preserves and if you like granola, put that on top. Do this in individual cups ahead of time (keeping the granola in ziplock bags) or the day of. Favorite parfait fruits are strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, or whatever you like best. If you need a side, use leftover frozen waffles or an apple/orange/banana. Day 5: Cereal is always a favorite and easy breakfast food (and you can always add fresh fruit), but if you still want something nicer, try making French toast for day 5. You can put all the ingredients together while still at home (except the bread of course) and have it ready to go in a bowl in the fridge when the day comes. Especially nice if you're not a morning person. Just pull out the bowl, pull out the bread, dip and cook. Bring along some syrup and margarine/butter if you like that kind of topping. Other options for toppings: Cinnamon and sugar mixed, powdered sugar, jam/jelly. Day 6: Using your microwave egg bowl or the stovetop, cook eggs and put them on toasted, buttered English muffins. Don't forget the cheese, and you can use ham or bacon from your other meals to add to it! Day 7: By day 7, you can repeat any of the first few breakfasts, but if you want something different, try a fruit platter. Pre-peel oranges, grapefruits, mangos, mandarin oranges, etc. and the day of, slice apples, bananas, etc. Add some grapes, plums, peaches and/or pears to the tray, and you're good to go. An excellent addition is bagels and cream cheese. Dinner Day 1: Meatball sandwiches. Buy provolone or mozzarella cheese already sliced, frozen meatballs, spaghetti or pizza sauce and hoagie buns. Cook the meatballs in the sauce (can do in microwave, too - just be sure to bring along plastic wrap to cover the dish), place cheese on the buns, and scoop the meatballs inside. Parmesan cheese sprinkled inside adds a little extra flavor if you want. Microwave or cook up a can of green beans in some margarine or butter with a little salt and pepper as a side. Instant pudding makes a great dessert. Day 2: Chicken salad. Buy some pre-made chicken shortcuts and a bag of ready made salad from the store. Add shredded cheese (whatever kind's your favorite) and salad dressing on the side. A can of soup microwaved or heated is a great side. For dessert, bake or buy a pie or miniature single serving pies. Day 3: Canned baked beans make an easy on the road meal. To spruce them up, add cut up sausage (such as Italian or Polish) or bacon, and sprinkle shredded cheese on top. Can be cooked in the microwave or on the stovetop. Prebake some Jiffy corn muffins or buy some cornbread/muffins/other bread from the store to go along. While you're there, get some brownies for dessert or bake some at home before your trip. Another option: rice krispy square treats. Day 4: If you like rice, a very fast on the road meal is the bagged, pre-spiced kind of rice. Adding fresh or canned vegetables can help if you want to spruce it up. This dish can also be cooked in the microwave. Remember to bring along a liquid measuring cup and utensils, if the resort doesn't offer them. The spiced rice comes in several different flavors - you're bound to find one you like. Canned or frozen corn makes a great side dish, or frozen egg rolls. For dessert, bring along some ice cream and cookies or finish off the pie. Day 5: Using more of the bacon from the day 1's breakfast, microwave or fry and make Bacon Lettuce and Tomato sandwiches. To spruce them up, get a nice texas toast or bakery bread, romaine lettuce, and tomato. Be sure you bring mustard or mayo along. Macaroni and cheese is a great accompaniment. Buy or bake ahead some soft, chewy cookies for dessert and/or jello/pudding cups. Day 6: Using the leftover hoagie buns from day 1, make Subway style sandwiches. Bring along your favorite lunchmeats, like pepperoni, salami, ham, turkey, pastrami, etc. Also bring lettuce, tomato, pickles, or other favorite veggie toppings. Don't forget the condiments and your favorite sliced cheese. For a side dish, serve any salad left from day 2 or offer some chips and dip or veggies and dip. Great dippable veggies include baby carrots, broccoli trees, cauliflower, sliced cucumber, celery and cherry tomatoes. If you don't want to chop all that, you can get a veggie tray at most grocery stores with dip already in it. For dessert: canned peaches/mandarin oranges/pears or other favorite canned fruit. Day 7: If you would like to make spaghetti, bring the noodles, frozen meatballs, canned/jarred spaghetti sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese and parmesan cheese. Add some garlic toast (the frozen kind with cheese is really great) and/or some salad, and you're good to go! For dessert, throw together the leftovers from all your other desserts (less stuff to haul back home), or if everyone's been munching on the other desserts, serve canned or thawed frozen strawberries over strawberry shortcake shells you can buy from the store. Be sure you get the kind of strawberries that are pre-cooked with the sugary filling. Top with Cool Whip.
