How do turn off the AUTOPLAY FUNCTION which starts when I insert a FLASH DRIVE in the USB port? (using XP)
Some setting must have been accidentally changed, becuase the computer used to open a dialog box asking what action I wanted to take.
I used to click on the "Take No Action" button, and then proceed to do what I wanted to do.
But now, when I insert a Flash drive, the computer immediately begins copying the files to somewhere and it does not even tell me where.
I would like to have it behave as it did previously, or even better yet, to automatically "Take no Action" without that dialog box opening each time.
I tried to go to the drive's "PROPERTIES", and clicked the Autoplay tab, and then selected "TAKE NO ACTION" >> APPLY >> OK , and I thought this would fix the problem, but it did not.
Can you please help me change this annoying settings problem ?
Thanks.
-----=======---EDIT---======------
Thank You, n3m0. I am hoping you will see this additonal comment. Your suggestion stopped the annoying behavior.
However, since I never previously visited the gpedit program, I am wondering what could have changed in the computer to cause it to begin running AUTOPLAY, in the first place.
I did make some changes in CONTROL PANEL >> FOLDER OPTIONS >> VIEW >> and >> FILE TYPES.
Could changes to these settings have caused the AUTOPLAY FUNCTION to begin running ?

go to Start Menu -> Run and type in:
gpedit.msc
You will see the Group Policy window. You should select Administrative Templates-> System in the tree view
You will see an item in the right side pane called "Turn off Autoplay", double click the item, and set the radio button to Enabled, and change the "Turn off Autoplay on" to All Drives.

ok, it copies files??? no, it does not. It is only scanning for autopay files (example: majority are mp3 files in the flash drive)
so it will give you the option in what to do (example: windows media player, real player, etc)
why "I tried to go to the drive's "PROPERTIES", and clicked the Autoplay tab, and then selected "TAKE NO ACTION" >> APPLY >> OK , and I thought this would fix the problem, but it did not." doesnt work???
still autoplaying???
just make sure that you saved the settings before turning of your pc...
if still wont, maybe it wont really save your settings...

I personally consider any "unwanted" activity (other than startup activity) "a crash."
If your computer was working like you wanted it to yesterday, something happened!
Try a rollback. Go into the Start button, All Programs, System, Restore.
If that doesn't get you back where you were, do several reboots. Run all your cleaning programs (Crap Cleaner, PC Bug Doctor, Registry optimizer, Adware REmover, Spy bot remover.

try formatting in case you wont able to format it i think of that your flash force is contaminated with virus or undercover agent ware like ravmon. in able to accomplish the activity. use ctrl+al+delete activity supervisor bypass to strategies disable all ravmon by utilizing doing so which you have the means to format your thumbdrive. yet once you do discover ravmon i propose you to apply run in the beginning up menu bypass to run form regedit enter then bypass to edit click discover form ravmon enter delete all ravmon document whenever you got here upon one only click f3 to hit upon next ravmon document. inspite of each and every little thing that test your thumb force. it may paintings out effective
