Yes, report it. I own a body shop and have worked closely with insurance companies and the dept of motor vehicles. Protect yourself from theft, vandalism, etc. Don't have anyone saying, "well your car is black, not red". Cover your own butt, just do it.

Due to most of the answers here I believe are incorrect, this answer may vary by state.

DMV does not need to be notified if you change the color of your car and neither does the insurance company. You should take photos of the car and keep your reciepts in case you have a claim you can show the condition of the car and the added value. That is in California. You can check with the DMV in your state and your insurance commissioner or agent.

The DMV needs to know if you changed the color. Insurance companies don't really care about color. However, the insurance company will want to know about the wheels.

    Paint- DMV

    Wheels- Insurance

You do not need to report to your insurance company, unless you wish to buy extra insurance for the customizing equipment. It is NOT automatically covered.

Most of the time, you do not have to report it to the dmv - you can change the color of the car on your registration, when you renew it.

You DO NOT have to report this to DMV or your Insurance company because your VIN and your Registration card License Plate Number and Insurance Policy are the same.. People paint their cars every day and do not report it to the DMV or Insurance Companies..

Paint and Rims have NOTHING to do with Vehicle Identification Number,License Plate Number, Registration Card or Insurance Policy Number

The color - no although be sure to keep your receipt. This is a preference and really doesn't create that much more value to your car.

The wheels, yes if their an upgrade from what you had prior.

Your insurance company will add an endorsement on your policy that show you have upgraded rims.

Remember, anything that substantially increases the value of your vehicle needs to be added to your policy through an endorsement. (rims, stereo system)

Tell the insurance company about all that is added in case of a theft or accident. Check your policy also, because some insurance companies will not pay you for add-ons in the event the vehicle gets totalled. I'd always tell them if I changed the color of the vehicle, why wouldn't you? Less hassles all the way around.
