I don't know... but our bodies definitely have healing abilities.... our cells are constantly regenerating... different organs take different time .... and I don't believe in " irreversible".... Congratulations on quitting smoking!!!

PS. Dr. Deepak Chopra talked about this in one his books....

Yes..it gets much easier! Just hang in there! I smoked for 16 years and I have recently been quit for a year! The first few days are the worst! You will be counting months before you know it..then you will lose count! Just don't go around any smokers in this critical period of the first couple of weeks! That will help a lot! Good luck! You can do it! Don't give in! Keep on Truckin'!

It may not get back to normal when your lungs were damaged to certain degree after prolong smoking history, like over 20-or 30 years. But it's always a very good thing when we quit, the damage will NOT progress to the worst., the quitting helps us improving our health.

Adding: I know someone that quit smoking after 20 or 30 years of smoking and having good and healthy life, my father!!

Source(s): I am quitting since 4-15 this year after over 32 years of smoking.

Your lung may regain some function over the next few years due to the resin working itself out. But the damage to the lung tissue is not reverseable. Smoking breaks down walls inbetween tiny air sacs making them bigger. The bigger they get the less oxygen your lungs can absorb. Don't start smoking again it will only get worse.

The truth will hurt!!! Your lungs NEVER recover. you are subject to COPD from the first cigarette ever smoked.

COPD drugs are totally nasty and have very nasty side effects!!! Most are steroids and cause every bit of harm they are purported to cause: weight gain, edema, high blood pressure, high glucose numbers, etc. And at that barely help!!!
