Should I transfer schools?

Im currently going to school at Massart in Boston

but I am struggling financially to keep up an apartment and go to school. I also have a hard time getting focused and really being serious about my work. I was looking into the art department at Umass Amherst and was wondering If I should transfer. I would be able to stay at home and not worry about rent. What do you think?

The art department at UMass Amherst is actually pretty good. It's not as... intense, maybe? As Mass Art, because it's not a pure art school, but that might actually make it fit you better. The professors are good, the art students are devoted, the talent is there, but students have a broader perspective than just art art art, and that might work for you. And if finances are an issue, living at home could really work.

I also feel that UMass Amherst has more of a campus feel to it than does Mass Art. There's more to do on campus, more of a residential feel to the place, and thus it may be easier to meet people and feel tied to the place. They do have a very active commuter club, which you might want to join. And I think they just built a new art building, so the facilities should be a lot better than they were when I studied art there (when the teaching was great, the work was great, but the building was falling in on us!)

If you plan to work in the arts when you graduate, make sure you do an internship while you study. This will make it far more likely that you'll get a job in the field when you come out. And do a lot of art-related work on campus, for campus clubs and etc. This will help you make friends there, and also build your portfolio and resume.

It's also nice, in that UMass Amherst offers both a BA and a BFA in art, and you can pick which is best for you depending on your own interests. I, for example, started as a BFA, but finished with a BA, because my focus moved from art art art to art and other subjects. It's nice to have that flexibility.

I think the transfer is worth looking into.

    Dear School Broad,

School is difficult enough without the pressures of finances.

AMHURST is a great school. If you can save rent by living at home you are blessed. Amhurst has a huge endowment fund. Make sure you get your fair share.

Design your degree with the idea of making a living. Think design, teaching and

    computing.

    Good Luck.

Do what feels best for you. Are you happy at your current school? Would being at home be better for you? Financially you should see what fits you best. Dont go somewhere you cant afford.
