Fastest motherboard AMD or Intel?

I smoked and overheated my motherboard I had an AMD 64 and I'd like to get a new board thats a little better with the heat issue. My roommate recommended the Intel Core 2 duo. Yes i know I need a new CPU too but I'm going to just get a new CPU as well since the motherboard is smoked who knows if the CPU is on its last leg too from heat. I'm into gaming but I want to stay under $300 for a good motherboard and CPU. I don't want to pay for cutting edge stuff with a huge pricetag that'll be outdated next month. I need it to be fast and stay cool because I'm putting in an Evga 8800GTS OC'd video card and they run hot. Also I'd like to have 2 PCI express slots to run in SLi eventually and 3 PCI slots 2 are already taken with my soundcard and wireless internet. Whats the faster CPU? Also since my motherboard isn't going to be able to use my DDR whats the faster memory now? Thanks

For CPU I would recommend this:

    For Mobo:

Memory that will fit that board:

The E8400 is the best bang for your buck right now, If you want Intel, they are a little faster than AMD's but also a little more expensive. The E8400 is built on the latest 45nm process should run nice and cool on your board, and they overclock like crazy if your into that.

Asus makes great boards, I tried to find you a gigabyte board which I prefer but could not find one within your budget with 3 PCI slots.

Memory is real cheap right now, so go for 4 gigs if you can afford it.

    Good luck

For your Price range the best CPU is the E8400 3.0 Ghz for about $180. Best bang for the buck. Its what I use. Theres only one dual core thats faster. Oh and go with one of the new oc'd 9800GTX's there faster and the same price sometimes cheaper. Go with DDR2 1066. Thats your best bet. Clock speed dont always mean faster. Intel E8400 is faster and more energy efficient than the 6400+

The fastest clock speed is an AMD 6400+ 3.20 Ghz Dual core, and most motherboard now use ddr2, but the fastest is ddr3 but it is expensive !!
