Please do not replace the transmission yet! When the trans is acting up, pull upward on the shifter while shifting and continue to hold it up when it is in gear. If it works fine this way, you need a bushing for the shift lever.
It's fairly easy to remove, Just take off the shift knob, outer boot, console cover, inner boot (6 or so screws). You will see an aluminum housing with a steel collar inside it. (The shifter comes through the collars oblong hole) With your thumbs to the left and right push the collar down into the trans and twist counter-clockwise. If you do this right, the shifter, collar, and a spring will come right out. Look in the hole and you will see your worn shift bushing. replace it and your problems will be gone!

I have a 1991 Toyota pickup, almost the same thing happened to me. I had to get a whole new transmission for it.
