As the others say, as soon as you want to go abroad (but preferably before then as it takes 3 weeks minimum to issue them. And we have a wonderful strike here in the UK, so it will take a good while longer....)

Whenever you go abroad. Children can no longer be on their parents passport. Unfortunately it's a little complicated trying to get their passport photo done.

You should apply for passport at least a month before you want to leave to go somewhere. I am a US citizen, had to get one for my daughter (she was under one) when I moved out of country for my husbands job. I am also expecting our second child. I will have to file all sorts of paperwork for US Citizenship and passport for my soon to be be born son.

  • As soon as you want to take your baby abroad. All children now have to have their own passports as they no longer allowed to travel on their parents

As soon as you need to travel. Some studios take the photo with the baby on its back on a white mat - much easier than trying to hold them upwards. Hats not allowed. Parent's hands should not be seen in the picture.

Straight away. Its ridiculous i know, as this first one lasts 5 years and so after a year or 2 the photo will look nothing like the child but thats the way it works now.
