Mental health disorders...the other victims?

Anyone know of resources for the people who've been abused by individuals with mental health disorders? (e.g., bipolar disorder) I see a lot of information to 'assist' the person with the disease. What about the coworkers, friends etc. who become the unwitting victims of these people?

There are plenty of support groups and such for family of persons with mental illness. And yes the illness can have just as much of an effect on the lifes of people that are close to them. Therpy and support groups are good resourses for people that are close to someone with mental illnesses. And being close to someone with mental illness it is almost as important to get some kind of therapy or out let as it is for the person with the mental illness to seek treatment, or else the illness can really cause a lot of stress.

As the one with bipolar disorder and on the milder end of things, i dont off hand know of those resorses, but i know that they are there.

    I'm sorry to hear that.

But what you need to realize is people with mental disorders cannot control or have little control over what they do and say..especially if they aren't seeking treatment.

Please if you need to blame someone or be angry, aim it at the DISORDER NOT the PERSON.

I don't have bipolar disorder, but I do have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I'm sorry, but say that you are the 'victim' is harsh.

The ONLY victim is the person battling the disorder, try to put yourself in their shoes..the hell they go through on a daily basis.

Do you even know anything about any mental disorders?

    Maybe you should educate yourself.

There are on-line support groups for family and friends that know a person with a mental disorder.

Here are many, many mental disorders, click on some and read about them:

Try the National Alliance for Mental Illness. They have locations across the country and someone there s/b able to put you in touch with support. You can also try your county mental health department. Again, they should know what's available in your area. Also, see a therapist of your own to help you work thru your issues.

As someone with bipolar who has never been considered abusive or hurtful by family or friends, I suggest that you start qualifying the way you refer to people with mental illnesses. The stereotype is wrong, ignorant and hurtful. Most ppl with mental illnesses, including bipolar, are not that way. Since you are seeking help, try not inflicking more harm along the way.

I'm not sure if victims is the right word. But I understand what you mean.

I'm in a support group on Yahoo Health groups. I'm sure they have support groups for care givers, family and friends of people with Mental Health Illnesses.

You can share your story and educate yourself and find ways to cope. You can blow off some steam and have people cheer you on when things start to get better.

    1) I am sorry you had a bad experience with one of "us" and I apologize.

    -however-

    2) "We" are not inherently bad people, and the grand majority of "us" hate being lumped into a group that are considered second-class citizens and scum.

    3) I would look up help topics about what has been done to you not by who. If you were sexually abused for example I would look up online support for those that have been sexually abused.

    4) I am very sorry that someone with bipolar caused you trouble but please don't assume that everyone living with the disease are bad people. I have it and I work as an EMT, volunteer instruct first-aid and CPR, and volunteer search and rescue, "we" aren't all bad people.
