Diaper Genie or No Diaper Genie? That is the question...?
We just got a diaper genie (the original) and while at the store we were debating on whether to get the diaper genie II. Is there really a difference? Also my boyfriends boss told him that he didn't need the diaper genie at all because we would be taking the trash out all the time anyway. Is that true? I'm expecting my first child, but I've babysat for the past year and a half and found the diaper genie to be pretty useful. Any suggestions??

You don't need one at all. Just keep cheap brand ziploc quart size bags in the baby's room, or use leftover Target bags. It'll trap the smell and then you will take it out anyway. Also, diaper genies, no matter what model or brand, smell horrible after about 6 mos... it's just not worth it. Not to mention you have to use their brand of refills which are insanely overpriced. Save yourself the money--return the original genie and don't bother with the second.

First off, I love my diaper genie! I have the Diaper Genie II and there really is a difference. My mom is using the original with my brother and I used one made by safety first with my 1st son. Both waste SOOOO much bag! We would empty the bags and there would be twice the amount of bag used than there were diapers in the bag.The Diaper Genie II hardly uses any bag at all. When we empty it, the entire bag is full. The refills aren't that expensive either. They last a long time.
I would recomend having a seperate trash can for baby diapers. Whether it be the diaper genie or something else. First off, even if you wrap up a dirty diaper in one of those diaper bags they still tend to stink up the kitchen trash. Second, things like diaper genies or other diaper disposals have things built in to block the odors from escaping.
Good luck and congrats!

NO DIAPER GENIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go with the Diaper Champ! I hated the diaper genie because you have to buy cartages and it adds up! Not to mention you have to do this weird drop the diaper, twist and push thing... Too much to worry about when you have a crying baby on your hands and you're trying to just get rid of a diaper for petes sake!!! I couldn't live without my Champ! It takes any sized bag, including trash bags that you use in your kitchen trash or grochery bags that you normally toss out *i'd suggest using the kitchen trash bags because it holds more longer and not taking out the trash is so nice for a bit!* so you save $ there. And then you don't have to twist and push or anything weird like that all you do is drop and turn the handle over and the stinker goes to the bottom, no odor *mine is next to my bed and the head of her crib so there's some good proof for ya!*, and it's the same size. It also comes in blue or pink! And not to mention that it's a bit cheaper than the Genie!

We have the diaper genie II, and I love it. The difference between the two is that with the original you twist the top after flipping it down and with the II there is no twisting, just a stronger flap to push the diaper through. I've used both, and think either one is great. I have yet to notice any sort of smell or anything. I'd definitely recommend one or the other. I also don't think the refills are that expensive. Just put a bunch on your registry. I think we ended up getting 5 or 6 of them, and have yet to buy any ourselves and we've been using the DG for 2 1/2 months now (I think we've still got three in the drawer, too).

I dont like the Diaper Genie... you have to be constantly taking out the trash and buy certain kinds of bags. I have something similar, but much better. It is called the Diaper Champ from Target. It is much like the diaper Genie but you can use your own trash bags or plastic bags from the grocery. It flips the diaper into the bag without the smell and I only have to change it about once a week. It is great!!! and significantly cheaper than the Genie and the bags.
I googled "diaper champ" and here are the results. You can even get it in different colors (new since I bought one!!!) and run for about $30. It was money well spent! I love it!

We have a diaper genie 1...it was great while our son was in newborn diapers, size 1 and size 2, but now that he's in size 3...I can fit like 4 diapers in and then we have to empty it...it's just too much hassle to have to turn the whole filled and heavy container over...pull out the diapers...cut the bag...tie the bag on each end...and then haul it out to the trash...it just sits in his room and put dirty diapers in a bag and take the bag out every night...our diaper genie does keep the room from smelling like poopy diapers when we use it, but like I said...it's just not worth the trouble anymore to us..we'll use it again when we have another baby..up to size 2 diapers, but once we hit size 3..it'll probably just sit in the nursery again.

I love Emma's diaper genie II. I don't know the difference in the I and the II. I was just thinking what if they do away with the I and I could not find refills.

I have the diaper genie II and love it. I had the original 12 years ago, and I find that I like this one better. My baby is 7.5 mons. old and I am still using it.

My son is 9 months old and he has never had a diaper genie. Im sure they are nice but if u change ur garbage often which Im sure u do, then theres really no need to have one at all.

I had a diaper genie for my son. and it worked when he was small enough to be changed on the changing table. but when he got bigger and started to roll around. the changing table was def. not the place for him. so really its up to you... i used it for the first couple months, and then stopped. it was just easier to throw the diapers in the trash can, cause i am going to have to take the trash out anyways lol.
but it def. helped with a newborn
