Extended breastfeeding? Why do people always assume...?

Why do people always assume that if you breastfeed past 12 months you are not giving your baby solid foods too? I see this on Answers all the time " a year old baby needs to be on whole milk and eating solids". My milk IS whole milk, and definetly better for my baby than cow milk! Why do people have a hard time believing a baby can eat solids and still breastfeed?

If you're not familiar with breastfeeding beyond the newborn stage, that may seem logical.

Unfortunately because Americans today think formula is just as good as breastfeeding and then at 1 year you're supposed to switch to cow's milk.

If people would read some more, they would see that breastfeeding is WAY better than even today's "advanced" formulas or whole cow's milk. The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding until 2 years!!

Until our hospitals are no longer given prizes, gifts, money and incentives for pushing formula, most people and especially first time moms won't know how much better breastmilk really is.

And good for you for pushing against the flack and giving your baby what you know is best anyway. A lot of mommies buckle under the pressure. I hope, in the coming years, our country will remember that breastmilk is best for a reason (it's God given!) and there is NOTHING as good as Mama's milk!

Yeah, I heard that a lot when my kids were nursing. I just ignored it if they were rude, if they weren't rude, I used it as an educational opportunity.

The thing that bugs me most is when they say they're worried that the baby will remember it if they nurse for too long. And the problem with that is??? I mean really, little kids don't think of a boob in a sexual manner, to them, it's comfort and nourishment. Why do we adults have to twist and turn everything into some dirty, perverse parody of what it really is? Why do we make sex the focus of everything?

People don't "always" assume that. I'm sure most people just don't understand or don't know much about breastfeeding past 12 months. Either that, or their personal opinion simply differs from yours. In such a public forum, you're bound to see a bunch of people that don't believe and practice the same things you do. It does not necessarily mean they're "ignorant".

I am not sure! I breastfed 2 sets of twins past 12 months and fed them solids.

I have seen some toddlers as old as 3 and 4 still being breastfed and you know that they are getting solids.

Maybe they just don't know - some people who answer don't have children, and to be honest before I had them I had no idea either. :)

breast feeding your child to long will make them to dependent on you and insecure in the world when they grow up break the cord and go with formula ..carnation good start is what we used it comes with the comfort crystals that help with gas so kids sleep better and longer .ps i know im a guy but i raised my to neices and my three girls i have now.my girl have there own personalities and are pretty independnt too we went on the formula for nutritional reasons the breast milk is good but it cant compete with science.
