Better safe than sorry?

I've be getting this alot from Christians, saying, wouldn't you rather believe in God, and risk being wrong but don't go to hell, than believe in no God, and risk being wrong but going to hell?

or something to that effect.

Now to Christians, if, say, in the end the Muslim God, or some other God of another religion, turned out to be right, and cast unbelievers to hell.....wouldn't the saying apply to you as well? And wouldn't that sort of defeat the purpose of telling people, esp atheists, "better safe than sorry"?

I'd like to know, thanks :)

Update:

I wasn't aware of Pascal Wager, thanks for the link :) and sorry for the repetition!

Update 2:

"Anonymous" - well, no I don't like killing people :) besides, do unto others what you'd want others to do unto you.

Update 3:

"Taja Allison" - it is not 'weird' to base a belief on evidence....for me it is more 'weird' to just believe in an ethereal, intangible being in heaven "just coz" or purely on faith. Compare that pls.

Fear is a big tactic among many Christians to gain more believers which means more $ and higher #'s for their churches. I hate the bumper stickers which say, "If you do not believe in a hell, you better be right" or "The Afterlife: Do you want smoking or non-smoking". I am not a Christian. I do not believe in a devil who is going to torment me when I die. I ran into a woman I know as an acquaintance today trying to see if I was going to some revival where free Bibles are given out. I tell you...these people are often worse than car salesmen...

This is a tough situation because of what the world is coming to, personally I do not think you are going over board. I am a mother of 2 they are 8 and 5 and I am constantly talking to them about strangers, they are not allowed to go outside without one another, and the great thing is my apartment has a playground a few feet from where I live so I can sit and watch from the window. I think there will be so many different opinions when it comes to this, I think you know what is best for your children and do what makes you comfortable.

That's the Pascal's Wager definition of believing and quite a few Christians believe this way.

Well Christians believe there is only one way to get to heaven and so you will not be able to convince a Christian that their god might be the wrong god. I would rather believe in a god of some sort than not believe in a god at all. That is just weird to think we are here by chance and nothing happens after life. GOD IS SOOOOOOO REAL.

It's called Pascal's Wager and its been discussed many times.

Yes, Christians don't think of this because they're too stupid. Its not like they go off and worship the other thousands of gods in the history of mankind.

thats christians for you... but believing out of fear of being wrong isn't truly believing... if there really is an invisible sky pirate, he would be pis$ed off about the fake believers. better to believe what you feel to be true than be untrue to oneself. but of course christians don't see it that way. boy will they b mad to discover they are wrong and we atheists or possibly some other religion actually has it right and they are cast down to the hell they are so afraid of. bahahaha, that will indeed be justice.

well the people who say they would rather be safe than sorry r idiots becuase abviously they r not christian for the reason they should be. they r just christains becuase they don't want to go 2 hell. u need to be christains becuase jesus christ died for you and loves u with an everlasting love. and they obviously haven't seen things to prove that he is real.

and as for there being a different creator. i know without a doubt in my mind that there is only God and jesus christ NO ONE ELSE u can say what if all u want doesn't make him any less real. that is just all there is to it.

R&S Christians are the only people to still propagate Pascal's wager...

Gambing on the side of belief is sufficient regardless of religious affiliation. All are judged by following a sincere, honest and educated conscience regardless of religious affiliation.

if you can fake it like that, then I'll just tell god I believed him all along and just wanted to pretend I was atheist to keep an eye on the heathens

so I'm covered either way (unless god reads this forum)
