Why do people want change?
Since the Constitution was written as such to protect the people from the government, Why do some people on YA, want such a fundamental shift, to put power into the government as a way to control their very lives from cradle to the grave.
i.e wage controls, taxation, health care Social Security welfare Department of education, HUD and most other federal bureaucracies, by their very nature put restrictions on what can and can't be done, or get punished. And they punish you by withholding money.
And to give a direct example. D
Drinking age at 21. whether this was right or wrong (not debated here) the federal government forced all states to raise their drinking age to 21 or risk losing highway money.
Now for clarification, I am a conservative - not a republican, not a democrat, not the religious right. all these groups believe in power in the central government
Captain Awesome: - I would contend your premis is wrong. It is not the responsibilty of the federal government to protect is citizens from itself. and as far as Fire, Police, education, and healthcare are concerned, they are a local issue, not a federal issue.
And I do believe in responsible taxation, not over taxation
21 drinking age, again not federal issue, and federally, if I can sign up to fight for my country, then I am an adult and should get a benefits and responsibilities of such
bikerphilosophy: I give you this quote
"Among the things excluded by the word "Happiness" (of The Individual), under the traditional American philosophy, is any element of Government's providing economic support, or security, for the people--of Government's assuming the role, the authority and responsibility, of satisfying their material desires. Such a role for Government would have been considered by The Founders and their fellow Americans to be the very antithesis of, as utterly hostile to, the American philosophy of Man-over-Government."
This, I believe would be counter to your argument of health care and education. Life (the right to live), Liberty (the right to be free without government intervention), Pursuit of happiness, (Not material, but happiness of mind spirit and body, whichever way it leads)
And as far as blaming the wrong party. I blame both of the main parties and the key lobbyists that influence and buy there vote.

Comes down to not understanding the ramifications of such change. Talk to average people and you'll find a shocking display of ignorance of some of our most basic freedoms. Education just can't compensate for lack of common sense.

I agree with a couple of your points. However I feel that you are blaming the wrong party. This modern Republican Party is a lot like the Party that gave us the 1st Great Depression.
Capitalism is a Wonderful thing. The problem is that Corporations or Greedy and there for we got Unions. Government should Not be in the "legal" business of it's citizens But Should be Up the Anus of Corporations making sure they aren't trying too Kill us with Lead Products and Mercury Water! And Shipping our Good job to countries where the wages are $30 a Month! This is why illegals are no big deal to them because they're flooding the job market and driving Down Wages!
As for Taxation, the current system needs too be scrapped and a National Sales Tax too replace it. Everybody pays! (food excluded)
Health Care=Life, Life you know the First part of that Old saying; "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness!"
Which takes me straight into
Education=Liberty=Freedom!
Drinking Age. they say that we are legally Adults at 18. MAybe that should be changed too 21 as well? But my feeling is; "If your Old enough too Kill or bekilled in War. You are Old enough too drink a Beer!
Now with Education and No Worries about Heath Care. A Man or Woman is free to in the "Pursuit of Happiness!" As a added Bonus Wellfare offices will get kind of empty. And so fourth. Requirement for this Free Education as high as you want too go and never worrying about your health care needs? 2 years service in either AmeriCorp, PeaceCorp, or Military. With a 6 week basic training for the Corps. Everybody at the completion of High School (disablilites exemption) goes regaurdless of Family Stature.
Better Dead then Red!

People want change every election cycle this is nothing new . Remember when the republicans in 93' ran on change !!! It was called the Republican Revolution !!!!! So they passes some laws and when after Clinton for whatever the reason . And didn't pay attention to what was going on overseas !!!! That's part of the reason we were attacked on 9/11 . They were so mad that Clinton won the didn't pay attention to what was about to happen too us !!!!! I partly blame them for 9/11 attacks !!!! And the republicans will probably do it again if Obama gets in there !!!! They are already doing it !!!! I don't consider myself a conservative or liberal more of a moderate . I don't like the right wing of the republican party because of the way the behaved in the 90's !!!! Don't want that again !!

The government has a responsibility to protect its interests. Its citizens are the largest interest that the government is invested in. With that said, people are stupid. So the government has to protect the public from itself. Without all of those things you mentioned we would be living like Africans. You think people would go to school if they didn't have to? Do you think an 18 year old is going to drink responsibly (I don't know many 21 year olds who do)? Without taxation, who is going to pay for roads and a police department? Or should we just not have the police, hospitals, fire fighters? Your question doesn't seem very well thought out.

Because too many of us do not want to take responsibility for own success and failure in life. In this country we are constantly looking for scapegoats on which to pin our problems. A strong controlling Federal government gives us the very demon we seek. People basically see injustice where none exists, but because they perceive it, it must be real. The Founders of this country were rugged, principled individualists. Much of the current population has lost these qualities. Sadly, life is just too easy in the United States and we have no concept of what real suffering or oppression is.

Good question indeed. They say that is the price of security - a loss of personal freedoms but I am not certain I agree. I stand more with Benjamin Franklin who wrote, "Those who will sacrifice freedom for security will have neither."
Have you ever seen anything (other than Military Forces) that the Government does better than competition in the free market? It normally results in mired down, bungling bureaucrats, wasting tax payer dollars and providing slow inefficient service in return. Even the thought of Government bureaucrats running my health care scares the living' hail out of me................

People want change partially because the current administration has put an emphasis on eroding basic constitutional rights, which puts unlimited power in the hands of the federal government at the expense of individual civil liberties. Helping other Americans through social programs is a worthwhile use of government resources, in my opinion. The drinking age requirement of the 1980s is a relatively minor issue considering the countervailing safety concerns.

1. They BLINDLY assume the "change" will be for the better....though any intelligent discussion would have you conclude it will be just the opposite.
2. Americans have QUIT. They QUIT being responsible for their lives and now WANT some one else to take over.
They QUIT school.... but think they "deserve" a well paying job.
They QUIT controlling their sexual urges... but think there's no harm to single-parent kids/homes.
They QUIT being entrepreneurs.... and want some one else to take the risks and provide jobs.
They QUIT being American... and now talk of Socialism as if it has EVER been a good solution.
They QUIT taking their politics seriously..... and now support a socialist, inexperienced, junior senator with NO accomplishments.

It goes to show how truely unaware some Americans really are. Some are simply hell-bent on the change candidate, yet when asked why they cannot give you a clear answer.

Its ironic that republicans want tons of govt intervention in our private lives with regulations rules, and even legislating morality. They think people are basically bad and need to be controlled, and we need to protect ourselves from these bad people with lots of laws
but
In the private sector, they assume everyone is good, and we need no rules or regulation or oversight, and that corporations will basically do the right thing when no one is watching- they obviously take advantage everytime that an industry is de-regulated
