What I translate it to mean is that he had children but had no way to support them, which made him depressed and overwhelmed, which caused him to die.

It sounds to me like, "having no means of his own", he

was strapped and could not support his children, which

led to his depression, letting himself go, and dying.

he died from so much stress.
