Post nasal drip/? persistent cough?

I have had a cough for over 5 years; I’ve been to the following doc's: Pulm, Gastro, Asthma, Allergy, Voice Box, ENT and four Gen Med Docs. No one can figure out why I cough all day, every day. Its dry, however, sometimes, I have a bit of mucus, but it’s clear. Everyone seems to think it’s a post nasal drip, but I can’t feel it. I can’t see how I would have post nasal drip even after taking medicines such as Alegra and Zyrtec, however, the only time I ever feel good is when I am put on Predazone, and I actually stop coughing for about a week or two. I can’t sleep, and every time I roll over, I cough even more. I wake up every morning with sore lungs, like I just ran a marathon. I've been tested for asthma, and I have a little bit, but not enough to make me feel as bad as I do. When I exercise, I never cough and I have great cardio. I'm going crazy! Is it possible that it’s a natural reflex at this point? Does anyone have any ideas, for I have tried everything? Hypnosis?

Update:

I take Cingular and have been for over a year, I also take the following: Advair, Nasonex, Proventic and for the guy named Rob S who told me to quit smoking is a jerk! I've never smoked in my entire life. I wish it was that easy. This is serious.

Update 2:

sorry I mean Singular... see I take so many things i cant even keep up. Thanks to the person who at least hoped I would feel better.

Update 3:

No I don't have a dusty house, or a dusty job, or a dusty car, and I don't live in a dusty world. Uhhhhh! not allergic to anything, not crazy, dont smoke, dont do drugs, what else...... I just down right have this stupid cough and I want it to stop!

anymore bright ideas????

Update 4:

Yes, Mr Formaly, I have had every test done, every x-ray, every medicine you could imagine. I've even been to the sleep clinic and everything checked out fine. thanks though!

Given your history, the docs have eliminated all the obvious causes. If you have not had a chest x-ray, CT scan of chest and sinuses, and pulmonary function test, these diagnostics would be the next logical step.

Its very unusual for someone to experience the symptoms you are describing when you wake in the morning unless you are breathing only through your mouth, if an irritant or allergen is present in your home, or if there is lung disease. The day time coughing could be due to the chronic problems that occur when you are sleeping. You could try sleeping a few nights with a surgical mask and a vaporizer to see if the problem changes. If so, this points toward breathing only through your mouth at night or an allergen or irritant in the air.

I had a persistent cough & that post nasal drip for about 4 months...not even close to the long time you've had it. The cough would wake me up at night. I finally went to my Doc & from what I describred she told me I most likely had a sinus infection. She prescribed an antibiotic for it. I told her that otherwise I felt fine & that I didn't think I had an infection. I also got a chest X-ray which showed no problems. After finishing the antibiotic my cough improved like 95%. I still cough occasionally but I think it is allergies. So, my Doctor was correct in her diagnosis.

    I wish you well.

    Ehm..

The food that you swallow travels down your throat and is pushed by contractions of the muscular esophagus. In the area where the esophagus joins the stomach a valve-like mechanism, known as lower esophageal sphincter (LES), is located. The closure of this muscle prevents stomach acid from backing up, or refluxing, into the esophagus. LES malfunction is the first factor that causes and contributes to gastro-esophageal reflux disease. In a healthy individual, the LES relaxes only when food passes from the esophagus into the stomach. After the food passes into the stomach, the valve shuts off, keeping the stomach content and acid inside. However, when the LES is weak and doesn't close properly, acid can splash up into your throat causing painful burning sensation, called heartburn.

A good natural method to cure your acid reflux can be found on this site http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=568

    I hope it helps

ive been pretty similar for the last 4 months and the a couple of the docs think it could be a type of acid reflux - LPRD - of which there is no attached heart burn or other reflux type things. A high doseage of Lansoprazole works quite well. good luck.

Have yourself checked for dairy allergy, it tends to increase mucus production and could be the simplest reason for your coughing.
