Windows Vista Help...?
Why won't my new Toshiba Laptop pickup my wireless internet connection? I have a Cisco Linksys Wireless & Broadband Router that I've used for years on my old Toshiba Satellite Laptop; never had a problem where ever I was in the house or on the patio. It crashed after 8 hard years so I bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium. Everyone tells me it should pick the signal up without a problem. But it doesn't. It's Radar picks up about 4 or 5 other signals that are secured but not mine and it's only three feet away! I even tried the Linksys USB Adaptor and plugged it in to one of the USB ports. I downloaded the new drivers for it. Still nothing.
I'm going crazy trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I'm not the least educated in the Vista software as I used XP before. What steps do I need to allow the new laptop (which says it has wireless built-in, to get my signal.??
If I plug the laptop directly into the router, I get the signal o.k...just not wireless..wifi is on, also.

Have you updated the routers firmware?
If the router is old it might not have been configured to allow vista to recognize it. Try contacting Linksys and getting the new firmware flash and that should pretty well fix the problem.
If not you might have to find someone more versed in networking... I know abit about the subject, but not that much.
As far as vista... your coumputer will automatically detect any compatible signal that the antenna intercepts. If your new computer has a diffrent wifi card than your router transmits it might never work together.
example
If you have an 'A' signal router but have a b/g/n wifi card then your systems will never talk to each other correctly...from what i know, there might be a way around this though, as i said you would have to speak to someone more knowledgeable in networking

Make sure your wireless settings are actually on, sometimes that resets or turns off. Go to your linksys server settings at http://192.168.1.1/ and enter your username and password information (by default, this is a blank username and the password "admin") and check the settings related to the wireless broadcast, making sure that everything is turned on
