Thus far i have liked all of Nice Vibrations answers big thumbs up i think he is correct.
My answer is however slightly different because his answer was quite a large one and it could be possible to miss his point so i will make mine a little different but his answer is correct make no mistake.
Yourself will be uncovered when you strip all of yourself away only then can you meet the true self (the self that is you and me as he put it)Is also as he put it every self. It is union with the Tao it is Going through Jesus to get to the Father it is in fact letting go of the self that gets you to the Self. The blessed Not-I is the true self. Zen is called the religion of death because the ego dies away the self dies YOU DO NOT DIE you are immortal because you are the Ultimate. Osho said in a book that i am currently reading "The fall of man is not because he disobeyed God. The fall of man is that he thinks HE IS. The fall of man is that he thinks HE IS SEPARATE FROM GOD.
So where is yourself, Yourself is dispersed throught the universe AS EXISTENCE ITSELF.

Well, I consider me as my self. I am never alone, because wherever I go, according to your statement, I am influenced by my surroundings and I am always surrounded by SOMETHING. I like and enjoy being by my self. I guess I enjoy my own company :)..nothing wrong with that. I am content by my self..but I DO have God in my life always and walk with Him every day so how can I possibly be alone??

Wow... this is one very interesting of questions.
You write that "You are all influenced by your surroundings and those around you and when you are alone you are influenced by loneliness".
Lets take this little further before we understand where is what we perceive as self. So we are affected by our surroundings. True... very true. Our thoughts are the result of our observations, indoctrinations and our own prejudices. And we get indoctrinated everytime we see, hear, smell, touch or feel something... or have a thought for that matter. So ultimately all our physical sensations are responsible for what culminates into our thoughts and added to this the emotion that is felt in this process makes us perceive that thought either as good or as bad. But we can take this to even further depths. What has culminated and taken the form of thought within 'us' through the process of sensations plus emotions remains there forever. They all can and do evolve but they are always there. In fact your own thoughts indoctrinate you further as you think more on them and/or write them down. And you are getting indoctrinated as you read this as much as I am getting indoctrinated as I write this. What is here is now a part of what you are... and it will always be. Yes it will not remain the same and it will evolve from your own point of view as you live your life experience from your own perspective. (Ha... in the mind of universe there is no copyright since we are all one and the same.)
Well, so where does this lead us. It means all that is around you is stimulating thoughts in you and also becoming a part of you. But now consider this. Suppose you are a poet, then as you focus on your poetry you will also want others of similar nature to come to you and stimulate you to further excel in your skills. And if you are really focused it will happen overtime naturally. Same goes if you are a singer or a writer or a professional or a cook or a coin collector, etc. But mostly we can be several of those and other things in our life. I mean, I can be a doctor, a singer, a writer, a good cook, a stamp collector, a teacher, a philosopher, all at the same time. And over time as I focus different levels of energies on different aspects of who I am creatively, I will find myself surrounded by people of similar interests. So I may end up finding an engineer who is also a stamp collector or a bank manager who has also published books or a businessman who is also a philosopher, etc. So now I have people who are actually different from me in several aspects but are of interest to me and are with me only because one of the aspect that they hold is the same as one of my aspects. In a way (actually truly) that particular aspect in them that is same as mine is actually a reflection of myself. If that is true then it means that everything that I am surrounded by is actually in one way or another a reflection of who I am. So if everything around me is a reflection of me and what is going in my mind... then where is my self dear.
I am one with everyone and everything that surrounds me. And as you and others read this, we are also one... just a reflection of each other. We are here together because there is some aspect of you that is me and there some aspect of me that is you. There is no your 'self' that is different than anyone else's 'self' but just an illusion. We are all an aspect of the same self, the only difference being that we are focused in different manner and hold a different perspective on various issues. Thats what makes us all unique and when we understand that even in our uniqueness, we are all one... then my friend... things are rolling for you.
Wow... thanks for this aspect of me that is you. :-)

depends on whether you're selfish and thinking of self or outgoing and thinking of others. Self is of the mind which is to have control of the body. If you have a strong mind and think for yourself then you aren't influenced by anyone or anything. That is what is meant by overcoming mentioned in the bible.

Mostly in thoughts, seldom in the present moment.
The 'influence' of the surroundings which we loathe at times, in fact rivet us to the present, and making the self more available to life!

I am neither influenced by my surrounding or others around me, and when I am alone I seek after God for his ways and his spirit to walk and be with me.

I am never alone, I may be tempted by my surroundings and others, but the word of God is alive within me, and we are as one.

I may be alone, but I'm never lonely.
My "self" is in this mysterious and beautiful world, I don't have time to be lonely when facing the world

We are never alone according to the word of
God.He is omnipresent!
