Do female dogs suffer post partum depression?????

Question

I adopted a german shepherd female from an animal shelter. Four weeks later she was showing signs of being pregnant. She was spayed and the unborn puppies euthanized. She is a really nice dog and healed nicely. She is stange in the fact that unlike most shepherds she is content to lay on the concrete under my truck all day long except in the morning when she follows my horse and I around when we ride. The fact that she was pregnant makes me feel like she still thinks she is going to be a mother. No one explained to her that after she awakened from the sedation she would no longer be a mother. It is almost like she just wants to be alone.

She was picked up as a stray.

Animals do not have the same level of conciseness that we do as humans. She did not need to have it explained to her that the puppies are not going to be born. She may of come from an abusive environment and has not learned how to interact with you yet. Give her time she will come around.

I do think that she would know that she was pregnant, and she was waiting for the day that her puppies were born. While she probably did not know that they were being euthanized, she can tell that her babies are not going to be born, because it is way past the time when they were supposed to be.

Give it some time. It's like any human's miscarriage. It takes some time. It is fairly depressing to not be able to have your children.
