Does your dog vocalize to you?

Just curious what other dogs/breeds do what our 3yr old aussie does. He will lay on his dog bed and make sounds, almost like mumbling. This is not barking, nor growling. It's like hes talking under his breath. His jaws hardly move while he is doing it. I'm not sure why he does it. It's not like he is telling us he wants something. I find it kind of comical.

Nixon, my Husky mix, sounds like he's yodeling.

He usually does it when he's trying to "talk" the cats into playing with him.

He purses his lips like a human would give a kiss and throws his head back. It starts out being sort of high pitched then it gets really deep like whhhhoooooooooooOOOOOOOO...

It's pretty, um, strange and funny.

Oh, and he imitates the sirens from police cars and ambulances. That tends to be pretty embarrassing when we're on a walk!

Our current dog doesn't vocalize in the way that your dog does. Our dog is a Shetland Sheepdog, which is a breed that is notorious for their vocalizations/barking. And our Sheltie lives up to her breed's habit...of barking. She barks when she wants food, she barks when she needs to use the bathroom, she barks when she wants to play...And when we say "walk," she will follow us around barking; and then when she gets outside and starts her walk, she will still bark as if telling the whole neighborhood that she gets to go for a walk...

My family used to have an Australian Shepherd (he passed away in January), and he was vocal in a very similar way to your Aussie. Our Aussie would sort of chatter like you said yours does. Every evening our dog(s) would always get a Milkbone, so when it got to be about 7 o'clock at night (it was as if our dogs could tell time) our Aussie would come and get me and sort of chatter and whine in a high pitched tone. He wouldn't bark and he wouldn't growl, but he would sort of just chatter and whine, telling me that he wanted his Milkbone. He would also do this for other reasons too - if he wanted a walk or if he needed to go to the bathroom, he would rarely bark, but instead he would sort of whine and mumble. I'll be honest, when we had our Aussie it was very hard to not humanize him - it was as if he would talk to us (with his mumbling and whining...), he could understand so many things that we said and he knew countless commands/tricks, and he even knew every person in our family (including grandparents) by name. Aussies are great dogs, so enjoy the conversations your dog has with you...

    Best wishes!

    I love it!

I think that they think they are talking and that we can understand them.
