Victoria sponge baby shower diaper cake recipe

    Ingredients

    110g (4oz) Butter

    110g (4oz) Caster Sugar 110g (4oz) Self-raising Flour

    2 Eggs

Vanilla Essence or 2 teaspoons Grated Lemon Rind

    Method

    Preheat oven to 190°C: 375°F: Gas 5.

Whisk together the butter and sugar until light and creamy. Add the beaten eggs gradually, and at the same time mix in a little of the flour.

Fold in the remaining sieved flour and add the flavoring. Bake for 20 - 25 minutes in a rectangular cake tin. Turn out on to a wire rack to cool.

Baby Shower Diaper Cake direction to assemble:

Cut the cake into lengths of three long ways, and roll up each slice. Before rolling the rolls can be filled with your favorite mousse or other icing.

These slices can be secured as a decoration by using a nappy pin. A more usual way is to add a piece of rolled fondant icing, to look like the sticky tab on a disposable nappy. Many people do not like the idea of something non-edible on a cake. The diapers are then stacked in a round.

The number you stack together will depend on how many the cake is serving. If your bottom layer has more than 15 diapers tie them together with ribbon twice. Tie one round of diapers with a thin ribbon. Use butter cream icing to stick the outer layer to this and then tie again with ribbon.

Assemble the second tier in the same way but make it smaller, than the first. The top layer is also identical bit you can use a baby feed bottle filled with candy as a decoration. Either stand this in the center or assemble the layer as the other two and rest the bottle on the top.

Often a diaper baby shower cake is used for a party of women a diaper bag cake may be a good and inexpensive idea. You cake make the baby shower diaper cake bag yourself very cheaply. Cut out pieces of white paper or greaseproof kitchen paper or aluminum foil. Roll the cake in this and tie with a piece of ribbon and send your guests’ home with a piece of baby shower diaper cake.

Here are the tips for the items you’ll need:

You’ll need about 2 ½ dozen medium disposable diapers. A lot of people try to use the small size; but they don’t work as well for the diaper cake. Besides, babies grow so fast; your mom-to-be will be glad to have the larger size.

A platter to serve the diaper cake on. You could also use a cardboard circle; about 16” in diameter.

24 yards of narrow width ribbon in whatever color you choose. You will use these to tie the diapers together to form the diaper cake.

    2 ½ yards of 1” wide ribbon

    9 ounce baby bottle

    Adhesive tape

Assorted baby items such as pacifiers, rattlers, bibs, combs, teething rings, etc.

Instructions how to make baby shower diaper cake:

First, take 50 feet of the narrow ribbon and cut it into 1 foot lengths. Then, roll each diaper up and tie it with a section of 1 foot ribbon.

Next, you’ll begin forming the tiers of the diaper cake. Keep in mind; this will be a 3 tier cake. Use the baby bottle for the center of the first tier and stand about 6 of the rolled and tied diapers around it.

Take a length of the narrow ribbon and tie them around the bottle. Make sure you don’t tie it too loosely.

Then, create the second tier using the same directions except use 15 diapers. You won’t use a bottle for the center of this tier; instead you’ll use a few of the diapers to form an inner tier and then form the rest of the diapers around that.

Use a length of ribbon to tie them all together; as in the last step.

See how easy it is to follow these directions?

To create the third tier; use 27 diapers and follow the same instructions how to make baby shower diaper cake that you did in the last step.

Place some adhesive tape on the platter on place the first cake tier on it; this will be the largest tier.

Attach it to the tape. Place the second tier on the bottom tier; attach with tape and then assemble the third tier on the second tier and attach with tape. You should end with the smallest tier.

Tuck the miscellaneous baby items inside the ribbon around each tier. You can use more ribbon if you need; to make sure they are secure. To finish, use the 1” ribbon around each tier to make more secure and for a finished look.

Apart from disposable diapers, we had the following ingredients ready for the diaper cake idea:

    * Yarn

    * Baby items like bib, rattle, little socks, pacifiers etc.

    * Ribbons

    * An empty paper towel roll or tube.

    * A soft toy or baby bottle to be placed on top of the cake

    * Baby gift wrapping paper.

We secured and rolled diapers making complete circles of the diapers, one on top of the other, next to the paper towel tube.

For securing the tiers, we used ribbon or yarn. We took care to see that the second tier was smaller than the first one. The third tier obviously was the smallest one.

Around each completed tier, we wrapped a length of wider ribbon to keep the layers intact and also hide any yarn which would show.

We inserted baby pink and sky blue colored ribbons into the wide ribbon. We decorated the cake with little cute baby stuff like bibs, little booties, colorful socks, teething ring, rattle and other such things.

You can use your own diaper cake idea and decorate the cake with baby stuff which you like. Our diaper cake was incomplete with the ‘topping’.

So we kept a little cute pink teddy on the top of the cake. You can use either a teddy or some cute soft toy or something which you think would look attractive.

While latching onto the diaper cake idea, just remember the basics: secure the paper towel roll or tube against the middle of the cake with the base first and then go up the tiers.

    This one is from About.com

Here are the supplies you will need to get started "baking" your diaper cake centerpiece:

Approximately 50 medium size disposable diapers. The cake I completed used 48 diapers, but since diaper brands vary in size, I'd keep a few extra on hand just in case. You can always give the extras to the mom-to-be.

A large platter on which to build the cake. I purchased a 16" disposable cardboard platter in the party store.

Approximately 70 feet of narrow ribbon for tying the rolled diapers (1 ft. per diaper), and tying together the tiers.

Approximately 8 feet of 1" wide ribbon for finishing the tiers.

    One tall baby bottle.

Small candies to fill the baby bottle.

    Adhesive tape.

Assorted baby necessities such as pacifiers, teething rings, combs, brushes, rattles, bibs, etc.

This next step is the most time consuming portion of this project.

Cut 48 feet of the narrow ribbon into one-foot lengths.

Decide whether you want the printed decoration on the diaper to show on the cake. If you do, roll each diaper from the fold outwards, keeping the decoration on the outside. If not, roll with the decoration on the inside.

Tie each rolled diaper with a length of narrow ribbon.

You will be creating three tiers for this cake. It would be helpful during this part of the process to have an extra pair of hands helping you hold things together as you tie.

    Begin with the top tier.

Fill the baby bottle with the purchased candy. Stand five or six diapers around the bottle and tie them tightly around the bottle with a length of narrow ribbon.

Create the second tier with approximately 15 diapers. Once again, tie tightly together with the narrow ribbon.

Create the third, and largest tier using approximately 27 diapers. To make the tying simpler, first tie an inner circle of diapers together. Then stand the final row of diapers around this circle and tie once again.

Now you're up to the fun part!

Place the largest cake tier on the platter. Using several pieces of adhesive tape on the underside of the diapers, tack them to the platter. Don't use so much tape that the diapers will tear when the mother disassembles it.

Place the second tier on top of the base and attach with tape to the lower tier.

Place the smallest tier on top and attach as you did the other tiers.

Tuck the various baby accessories inside the ribbon, all around the cake. Make sure they fit snugly, and tie with more ribbon if necessary to keep them from falling off.

Finish the cake with the one-inch ribbon wrapped around each tier to help secure the accessories and provide a finishing touch.
