Catholics: When we say the Apostles Creed...
we say, "...I believe in the resurrection of the BODY and life everlasting. Amen." Does this indicate the afterlife will be corporeal? It seems most people assume heaven is a spiritual existence, that our bodies won't have anything to do with it. But I wonder. Why so much emphasis on the flesh if that is so? All seven of the sacraments have a bodily connection. Do you think we truly leave our bodies behind in heaven?

Short Answer:
Catholics pretty much interpret the Book of Revelations to be a metaphor of Christ's life and the first century of the church. Catholics don't believe in the Rapture. However, we do believe in the Second Coming of Christ...always have. Our bodies are resurrected and merged once again with our souls.
Then eternal judgment takes place and all will see who goes to heaven and who goes to hell. That is also why Catholics frown upon cremation of the body. The idea being that your body is...sort of...all in one place. However, if you must be cremated, you can't have your ashes scattered at sea or scattered across the Grand Canyon, etc. Your ashes must be buried in a cemetery. I believe that is why underground vaults are used in Catholic cemeteries, too.

From the Original Greek..
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth;
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic (UNIVERSAL FOR ALL )Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
(translation by the International Consultation on English Texts)
This is the Original Greek Apostles Creed which the RC \Chuch translated into Latin ( which is derived from Greek)

When we die.. The body goes to dust and the spirit returns to God
Ecclesiastes 12:7—The body returns to the dust and the spirit returns to God. The Bible does not say the soul returns to God, but the spirit.

There is a time when your mortal body will take on immortality. You will have a resurrected, immortal body and live again on the earth. This is when Jesus comes back to rule and reign on the earth for 1,000 years. This is called the Millenium Rule of Christ. This has been Christian doctrine ever since Jesus Christ left the earth. Jesus is the first-born of the dead. This means that there will be others born from the dead. So, when we die, our spirits go to paradise to be with Jesus. At some point, Jesus comes to rapture the dead bodied out of the graves and take out His people that are living in this great rapture - they will all meet in the air. After all His people are collected, Jesus will come back to earth and we will be with Him - in our Resurrected bodies. This is ancient Christian doctrine. It is embedded in the Apostles Creed and in the Holy Bible. Most Christians do not know Christian doctrine very well. They have not been taught.

well this explains the beginning of wisdom in you! nice question...
but certain things are best when not said..God has given us brains but not enough brains to figure out the mysteries of heaven which also includes the question, how God was there from the very beginning?..
st paul , was shown in a dream ,the heavens and it's magnificence.but he too still doesnt know much.!
and it's also said that during the Judgment day bodies shall rise from the graves! i guess this explains a part of ur question..
it's hard to explain when many people come up with their own theories which doesnt make any sense at all..
Only God knows the secret!! when we die and if we are to go to heaven and if the things said abt heaven are all true ..we will find out then..what else am i to say!

The term "hell" in the apostles creed is translated from the hebrew "sheol," which didn't imply the Hell of the damned. The early Christians believed that no one entered Heaven until after the death of Jesus, but that even so, the souls of the just were kept separate from the souls of the wicked (as in the parable of Lazarus and the rich man.) They were kept in a place called "the bosom of Abraham," or "the limbo of the fathers." A waiting area where they could be kept from punishment until they could be admitted into Heaven. This place; this abode of the dead, is what is meant by "Sheol," and it's what is meant by this line in the creed. I better translation would be "he descended among the dead." or "to the place of the dead."

We leave our bodies behind on earth when we die now but at the end of the world our bodies will rise and be one with our souls. Just like Jesus Christ lives in Heaven with glorified body and soul and his mother, Mary.
I think if it wasn't true there wouldn't be so many incorruptibles that remain upon the earth, its a sign of what is to be.. http://www.overcomeproblems.com/incorruptables.htm

On judgment of the whole world those who's souls are in Heaven will regain their bodies, but they will be glorious. Look at the Ascension of Jesus or the Assumption of Mary, both contain body and soul in Heaven likewise our body and soul will be in Heaven on Judgment day.

I am Catholic, recently confirmed this past Easter. Before that, I was Southern Baptist. As a Baptist, and now as a Catholic, I was taught to believe our bodies will be returned to us on the last day of this earth, when Christ comes back for us. Ask your priest what the Vatican teaches. The Apostles Creed is what we believe. Dont let non-believers tell you otherwise.

If I remember my CCD class correctly, the body is left behind for now, and only the soul goes to heaven. Then, at the end of time, your body will be resurrected in perfect physical condition to join your soul in Heaven.
This may also be a Catholic version of the old Pagan belief, "That which is above is like that which is below," i.e., that the spiritual plane resembles the physical plane in many ways.
