Why would Obama criticize McCain's support for a ban on all race-based discrimination?

McCain approved of the the Arizona ban on any practice or policy that discriminated for or against a person of any race.

Speaking to a conference of minority journalists on Sunday, Obama said he was "disappointed" by McCain's position.

Why would Obama approve of discrimination for or against any race - is he really the candidate of change we keep hearing about?

Update:

I'm not denying that some forms of discrimination exist. And yes, some of the worst discrimination in our history has been against women and minorities.

I just think that if we are to ever TRULY change the way this country views the issue of race, we have to abolish ALL unfair discriminatory practices.

    Because it would mean that

Business owners wouldn't have to hire a women if they felt like they only wanted men on the job force. Same goes for disabled people to. They could legal go unpunished for not wanting any minorities(blacks, hispanics, women, disabled people) working for them.

If there was not any form of affirmative action then I could go and say.

I am looking for abled body men to do office work for me. No disabled of women because I don't like them. Any color f men is fine as long as you aren't a woman and you are abled body. I don't care how qualified you are, women need to stay at home and cook dinner while disabled people stay far away from civilization as possible.

Does that sound like a win to you?

Affirmative Action is in place for people who have that 1960s mindset.

Come on, I suspect that you're smarter than this. First of all something has to be done because things still aren't done in a non-discriminatory way. There is still a thing called "White man's previliage" that shuts out European-American women and minorities. The idea of "race-based' discrimination is a creation of the Republican party to stoke the so called angry white man voter base. Funny, I don't remember people bitching and moaning about race based discrimination before more minorities and women started to exert themselves politically and economically

McCain is really saying he's against Affirmative Action. Which is another flip-flop, because he earlier called the bill "divisive."

The problem with this ban is that you can't stop racism with a law, so you need things like Affirmative Action to make sure the system is fair.

I am beginning to believe he intends to discriminate for one group of minorities.

"He is not one of us" was said by Mc Cain. It doesn't sound like he is for a ban on race discrimination to me.
