What does it mean if my tires are "cupping"
Last time I took my car to my dealership for an oil change, I was informed that my tires should be replaced soon because they were "cupping." They said it wasn't a safety issue, but I should consider getting it done by the end of the summer. I took my car to a tire store, and the people there inspected them and said I still had a long time left on them, at least another year.
I don't know who to believe. My dealership doesn't sell tires or have an affiliation with a tire store, so it's not like they were trying to scam me into paying more.

Tire cupping and feathering are commenly confused. Take your hand and feel across your tire. Does your hand glide across smoove? If not then you probrably have a tread wear problem.
Cupping usually is the result of a suspension issue. i.e tire is bounceing thus causing a cupping pattern along the tread.
Feather can be caused by improper alignment and or break / bearing issues.
I would suggest a third opinion, as the first and second are not very detailed. i.e. whats causing the problem in the first place....

If your tires are cupping it probably means that they are wearing unevenly which is a sign of an alignment issue. i would take your car to another tire shop and just have it checked out if they say there is nothing wrong with it then don't worry about it. the other thing you can do is go back to the dealership and have them explain to you or show you the exact problem and then explain that to the tire shop and see what they say if it is something you should worry about or not

I believe that cupping is when the tires get a sort of scalloped edge to them. It can happen if you don't rotate your tires. If the tire store said you have another year on them I would think you would be safe.
Whenever you do get new tires you should have them rotated about every 6,000 miles,

sounds like someone wants to sell tires. cupping tires are a result of probably bad shocks, but why didn't the other shop tell you that you had a problem.
