How do I let these dogs meet for the first time?

I have a male westie and I am thinking of adopting a female cairn terrier. My westie hasnt been exposed to many dogs but he barks at them when he sees them. We have only really introduced him to other male dogs but we don't know what he will do to them. Were not sure how he is with females yet. please help!

Update:

I forgot to mention we are adopting her from a shelter and we will definately let them meet before we adopt her. I was wondering also good ways to calm my westie down if he starts barking. I know the cairn terrier will be ok with him though. I really appreciate all of your answers!

If you have access to a gate, put the new dog in a gated area and the other dog outside of it so they can see and smell each other. You need to do this until they are comfortable enough with each other and no aggression is shown.

Before you adopt her, see if you can find someone that has a female dog. Plan to meet up somewhere that is neutral ground ( a park, on a walk, etc) but completely avoid places that your dog thinks of as his own. Keeping them both on the leash, get close. It is very important that you and the other human remain relaxed because dogs can sense when you are tense. Let the dogs sniff each other. If things get a little heated, separate them and calm them dog and try again. Don't take them off the leash until you are sure that your dog is ok with the other one.

It is more likely that he will accept a female dog. Good Luck!

hold them both on a leash . . .then let them get close and sniff if one barks say stop if it dosent stop take it away or you can take a stuffed animale and give it to the new dog . . let your old dog sniff it and then let him sniff the other dog

well you could try introducing them at the bitches place as the girls are more terrotorial or at a park or large open space and keep reasuring him to show him your not going anywhere
