What groups used two axes in their symbol during the mid 1800s in the United States?

Update:

Thanks Mina. Worth checking out I guess. I found the symbol on a medallion during an archaeological excavation. Don't know if it changes your answer but it also said something about a lodge number 170 and a 4th number I could not make out.

Hi! I am a Mason and the symbol you describe does not sound like anything associated with Freemasonry that I am aware of. I came across a few gravestones a several years ago that looked like tree stumps with a symbol like you are describing and my grandfather stated it was a fraternal group called the Master Woodcutters of America. I don't think they were actual "wood cutters" but I don't know much more about the organization. I hope that helped and good luck.

This is a shot in the dark, but I seem to remember that being the symbol for the Temperance Movement.

Where did you find this? It's starting to sound more like a possible mason thing. Were they definitely axes, or could they have been hammers?
