Page cannot be displayed, what to adjust?

Trying to fix up my sis's computer while housesitting for her. Tried to update a bit and add AVG free, but found out she didn't have service pack 2, can't make it work right without it. So I download that, and then get, "page cannot be displayed."

So I tell it to go back to where it worked properly, and find out that she used a different dial-up password when it worked properly, so can't even connect. That I can probably find out by asking her, but does anyone know how to fix the page cannot be displayed thing?

Fix the dial-up password issue first. That's the first order of business - if you can't get to the internet, you're certainly not getting any web pages to display.

SP2 automatically turns on the Windows firewall - and, as I recall, completely turns off internet access. Go check the Windows Firewall in the Control Panel, turn it off, then try the page again. If the problem is solved, turn the firewall back on, but make sure you give the system outbound access to the internet. Then, when you try it again, see if any popup dialogs show up (usually in the lower right corner of your screen) when you try to access the page - they will ask if you want to allow your browser to access the internet. Allow the access (and tell it to remember the selection).

If the "Page cannot be displayed" error still persists after tweaking your Firewall settings, uninstall AVG. If that fixes it, re-install AVG (if you want), and make sure you've set it up properly for her system (depending on which features AVG Free has, it could be blocking internet access).

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241344 for more info about the error message you're getting.
