Hi! I'm buying a car today and need help negotiating...?

Does anyone know how to go about this? I don't want to get taken advantage of like I did when I bought my current car. Any tips, info or advice is greatly appreciated! I am buying a 2008 Malibu (new)

You DO NOT walk in and buy a car. That's a Surefire way to get robbed in Daylight. You will end up paying Sticker price and buy bunch of extras you don't want.

Most important. Arrange your own finance with a Credit Union or some such. If nothing else find out how your credit is. So the Dealer won't give you crap.

You can get that car for $4000 to $5000 bellow Sticker easily if you do your homework right. One thing is for sure. You buy the car on phone or Email and walk in only to sign to paper to Pick it up.

First off. Find out the Invoice Price from Cars.com including Destination charge for your Zip Code. You also have to add Advertising Charge for your State as well as Documentation Fees. Here's a list of them.

This article will also tell you what fees you should no pay. Here's another Eye Opener

Confessions of a Dealer Finance Manager. Needless to say don't buy extended warranty.

You need to arrange for your own financing. Next try and sell existing car on your own with Craig's list or Autotrader. At the same time reach out to the Internet managers or Fleet Managers of at least 15 Chevy Dealerships in your area. They are the ticket to you getting lowest price.

Here's something to help you. Traditional Buying Vs. internet Buying.

Your best bet is to use Fighting Chance.

I used them one year back to get the 2007 Malibu for $5000 Bellow Sticker or $1500 bellow invoice.

If you find this hard or don't want to spend the time to do the research then use Auto By Tel.

It won't be such deep discounts but you will get at least reasonable deal.

First off, Nice choice of car, there is a very good reason why it was named the "north Americian car of the year".

When you get to the dealership and the sales rep starts to do the whole run down and walk through on the car, ask alot of questions, try to keep him on his heels so that he doesnt have time to start spouting off his reasons as to why you want to buy the car, but get answers from him as to fully set yourself into the want and need to buy the car. You want to stay in control of the dealings as much as possible, but there is also a fine line that you have to walk from being in control and assertive to being obnoxious and to far reaching when it comes to price and haveing things thrown in for free like most people want.

When it comes to the price discussion, and he tells you what the bottom line is, make sure you ask for a "full disclosure agreement".

This is an indepth breakdown of where your money is going and what your spending it on, it will have vehicle price, interest rate equaling X amount of dollers, any other applicable fee's and taxes included and the most important, what you actually will spend on the car when everything is added up and your done paying for it, this is the "total cost of ownership" If you are willing to pay that, then go ahead with the rest of the deal and get all the paper work going, DO NOT SIGN A THING UNTILL YOU HAVE READ EVERY PAGE CAREFULLY AND THE NUMBERS ADD UP. If the numbers on the contract dont match what the full disclosure said, point it out, make sure its fixed, and dont take any excuses at face value, just have the issue fixed. From here on out its pretty much smooth sailing. Hope you enjoy your car.

Source(s): I am a GMC, Chevy, Pontiac, Buick sales consultant at a reputable new and used dealership where this is common practice, and customers really appreciate knowing they are not getting screwed.

Know everything you can about the car BEFORE you go into the dealer showroom. Get invoice prices and incentives from Edmunds.com. Know what options come on the car, and which options you want. Go to owner forums for the Malibu and find out what others think about it, and what problems they've had. Go to ConsmerReports.org and find test drive reports and reliability predictuions. Test the drive the car both in the city and on the highway.
