Why are we hanging Georgia out to dry?

This is one of Bush's screwups. I have supported him about 90% of the time but this is huge. Georgia was in Iraq helping us tear down Hussein's regime. Now when Russia invades them, we're just pointing fingers at Putin. We need to be doing more than sending 2 planes with blankets. I know we're stretched thin in Iraq and Afghanistan. But certainly all of our troops aren't there. Bush has hung Georgia out to dry.

Update:

Well we need somebody who is going to protect our allies.

Update 2:

Russia is not more powerful than the US. Are you kidding me?

Russia's total population is 142 million. We have 300 million people. Time for the draft.

Update 3:

Brook, that backwater meaningless country is our ally.

I've been wondering this myself. It seems like if Bush truly believes that it is our duty to support democracy around the world then he needs to be actively supportive of Georgia. Georgia was there to support us, and I think it is our duty to support them. Of course it's risky to engage Russia. But we are the U.S. and we should NOT back down in cases like this. To refer to a previous answerer- we need so show that we do indeed have a big stick and that we will use it IF necessary.

Keep in mind, this is Russia's doing, not ours.

It's time for the draft. Little Johnny needs to put down the video controller and pick up his rifle and go to basic. Bubba Clinton cut our military to the bone in the 1990's and we still have not recovered from that. We need at least 4-5 more divisions for the Army and Marine Corps. to meet threats like this when they come up. Contrtary to what the writer says. The Russian military is stuck with hardware that is circa 1985 (T-72 tanks BMP'S etc.). Not exactly to their advantage. Just ask the Republican Gaurd in Iraq who had the exact same hardware.

Do you have any idea how powerful Russia is??? With most of our troops in Iraq what are we supposed to do attack Russia and get eaten alive? Bush is doing the right thing we need to stay away from Russia, and try to help Georgia IN Georgia....

Because the administration has no leverage and can do nothing but bluster and blow hot air. Teddy Roosevelt advised speaking softly and carrying a big stick. The current administration blusters and yells loudly and carries a tiny stick.

I don't think how Russia is behaving is right but they were only reacting to the Georgians going into S.Ossetia. They were waiting for an excuse and Georgia gave it to them. And obviously George Bush is an idiot no matter how you look at it!

Georgia should have thought about what Russia was going to do and asked for our support before attacking S.O.

Are you suggesting we declare war on Russia? Are you out of your mind? We spent over 50 years avoiding war with Russia, and then they attack some backwater meaningless country, and you want us to start WW3?

There has been a treaty signed by Russia and georgia.

You are aware that Georgia started this whole mess by invading and bombing South Ossetia (who doesn't want to be part of Georgia). They hung themselves.

You don't poke the Russian bear and not expect to be poked back with massive amounts of force.

This is a good question. Maybe they are afraid of Russia.
