Has anyone else here had placenta previa? What was your outcome?

Last week's ultrasound showed that I have complete placenta previa - the placenta is at the bottom of the uterus instead of on one of the sides. I'm right at 20 weeks along, so there's a chance the placenta could move up. However, because it's a complete previa, moving completely out of the way is unlikely.

Has anyone else here had the same problem? Did you have any complications like bleeding or early labor? Did you need a c-section?

Update:

Thanks, Momotron! Glad to hear things worked out so well for you - it's very encouraging.

I had complete previa with my first pregnancy and marginal previa with this pregnancy. My first, I was terrified by all of the information I read on the internet. So my first bit of advice, don't look things up online. People tend to share their horror stories and not the regular, normal, run of the mill stories.

I never had any bleeding with the complete previa. I was very cautious and limited my activity big time. While my doctor never put me on bedrest I would just force myself to rest a lot so I didn't put any unnecessary pressure on the placenta.

At 36 weeks gestation, my doctor performed an amniocentesis to determine if his little lungs were mature. They were so they took him out the next day by c-section. There is no safe way to deliver vaginally if you have complete previa. The risk of bleeding is way too high. My son spent a week in the NICU and came home healthy as can be.

There is still a great chance your placenta could move up but if it doesn't, things aren't all doom and gloom! I'm glad your doctor caught it at this stage. Just take it easy and try not to be too fearful! Good luck!

I had complete placenta previa as well. I was diagnosed at 17 weeks. I was also told that it could move up. Mine never did. In fact, I was told by my perinatologist that mine was the most "complete" she had ever seen. I was put on bedrest at 22 weeks. I was also put on "pelvic rest" which meant no sex, no cervical checks and no vaginal ultrasounds. (I had to be diligent about telling nurses in the hospital about this)

I was told I would definitley need a c-section. There is no way a baby can pass through the placenta which is blocking their "path". My c-section was scheduled for 36 weeks, which is common with previa. I was given steroid shots at 28 weeks to help mature the baby's lungs since she was going to be early.

I ended up with an abruption at 35 weeks. Woke up early in the morning and was bleeding heavily. We raced to the hospital and my daughter was born by emergency c-section within 90 minutes of my arrival. Thankfully, she was perfectly fine.

Be very careful and ask about bedrest. Tell every doctor and nurse you come in conact with that you have complete previa. Watch for ANY signs of bleeding and RUSH to the ER at the first sign. An abruption can be life threatening. If you follow your docs orders and be cautious, you should be just fine.

Best of luck! I have been there!!

I will be 19 weeks on wed and I have Complete Placenta Previa. I have been on bed rest for a few weeks (due to the bleeding). Just listen to your doctor if they say pelvic or bed rest... Do exactly that. Good luck!

I'm 34 weeks right now. They checked mine at 20, 30 and they are going to check it again here in a couple weeks. I'm not complete previa but I have a low lying placenta that hasn't moved up yet.
