Xbox live connects you to the Xbox 360 online community type thing.

There are 2 memberships, Silver (Free), and Gold ($50 a year)

In a silver membership, you're able to download games and demos and stuff, but you can't play online with other people.

In a gold membership, you can do everything with a silver membership and more. You can play online with other people and even do video chats and such.

when you make a gamertag you get one month of gold free, and then you can buy it for $50 per year if you like it. You can get a month or 3 months but a year is the best value. What LIVE gold does is lets you play games online with people around the world. If you don't want that, you get XBOX live silver, which allows you to download game demos and chat with friends, but no online play.

Answers above are correct. You really should get xbox live you wont be dissappointed. It's fun and you will rarely be bored. GTAIV is great especially online. You can also buy prepaid cards at like Gamestop and other electronic stores. You can buy 3 months 6 months (i think) and a full year. it's your choice.
