Is it possible to develop a sudden allergic reaction when you have never had allergies?

I am a 36 year old mother of 3, no known allergies to anything other than Ibuprofen. I have lived in the same home for 6 years. Same pets, kids and husband. We have not recently changed laundry detergent or soaps, shampoos, etc. I use moisturizer every day, so I really doubt my skin is dry.

All of sudden this evening, I had a sneezing fit which continued for over an hour. My skin (arms, thighs, back, neck, hips and stomach) suddenly became extremely itchy and red. There are no visible bumps or bites. I applied lotion thinking my skin was dry, but this didn't help. I then took a shower and applied a different lotion for itchy, extra dry skin. The shower and lotion temporarily helped, but as I am typing this, it's beginning to itch something fierce again. I am not scratching and the redness is not going away.

Can you suddenly become allergic to something you have always eaten or something you have had for over 5 years? Does this sound like an allergy or do you think this is just extremely dry skin?

Thanks for your help.

Update:

I have looked up Shingles and I feel safe ruling that out after reading the symptoms.

But the allergy thing is scary. If it happens to be a sudden allergy to my favorite soda, I will cry. Thanks for well wishes....but I still itch really bad.

Update 2:

12 hours later, still extremely itchy. Benedryl helped to relieve itchy symptoms long enough to fall asleep early this morning. Itching kept me up all night. The help from Benedryl makes me believe it is an allergy of some type although I don't know what it could be an allergy to. Going to try Aveeno Oatmeal Bath (to sooth itch) and Buffered Vitamin C to hopefully detox body. If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks.

I have allergies, but the chemical I am allergic to, I haven t so-far found listed as being part of any Band-Aid adhesive. In spite of that, I have suddenly become allergic to Curad latex-free band-aids, which I have used in the past without any allergic rash; it is not a new box, they came out of the 100 ct. box that is almost empty. I tried a home-made Band-Aid made with paper tape (3M brand), putting it in the opposite direction, and it has given me a rash as well. I am trying to keep Vasoline on a skin biopsy on my shoulder, and a frozen spot on my back under my bra, as per instructed by the dermatologist, ; there is no way to wrap locations like these. The biopsy came back negative, but it s a Lentigo sun spot that itched like crazy in the first place. Now it itches because it is healing, but the rash around it itches worse. I am using the cortisone gel that I use on my other Contact Dermatitis bumps, but it is not helping much. I read earlier today that a rash from band-aids can flare up again, if you get another one, even in another place. None of this sounds good; how do we contact the FDA? May not do any good anyway. Some TV stations will investigate things like this, and that might get attention brought to it on a larger scale!

you can become allergic to anything at any time. if you are allergic to your fave soda you have an allergy to corn if it is a reg soda. if it is a diet you are allergic to sucralose ( splenda) i have corn and wheat allergies. i also have asthma, sinus and hay fever. you need to go to an allergist to find out what exactly you are allergic to. don't lose hope and good luck. let us know what happens. if you have foood allergies i have some names of some really good cookbooks you might try. you can email me at www.whiteharleytrike@yahoo.com

Yes you can. My son always ate apples, then one day at school he started to take a bite of one and as soon as it touched his tongue, his mouth became extremely itchy. We had his tested and he is allergic to them and pears.

Have you recently taken anything as far as a medication? That may be the cause or you may have shingles, ...really I would call the doctor if it persists and gets worse to the point it is affecting your daily routine.

    Hope you fell better soon!

*I want to correct myself....I mentioned shingles as a possibility only. They can itch and burn, but mostly come on gradually. Forgive my misunderstanding.
