A lot of Hillary supporters are angry about it because they think Obama did it to mock Hillary's 3 AM phone call ad.

The real reason that the Obama campaign did it was to get more cellphone numbers for their election day Get Out The Vote (GOTV) effort.

They'll start texting everybody the day before the election and then all day on election day reminding them to vote and to ask them to get others to vote too.

Between now and election day they can use those numbers to ask for volunteers, announce rallies, raise money, etc.

The campaign can also sell the lists of phone numbers to other campaigns.

    Look for Obama Text Spam.

No. The Biden thing leaked at like 1 in the morning, and he had promised supporters he would let them know first. He had to do it before it was all over the media.

I would have been mad if my phone beeped from a text message at 3 in the morning.

He had to get the message out before people woke up, because the media had already seized of the story the previous night, and he wanted to make it look like the text message came first.

I think it was in response to the leak that happened shortly before.
