Jehovah's Witnesses, seriously, why is it mandotory that Christians wear suits to worship God?

I even heard that on some meeting or some of the elders have to wear matching jacket and pants, complete suit.

A reference from the bible will be helpful. Were does Jesus comand that Christians should dress up in business suits?

Also, if were mistaken by the generation of 1914, could you be mistaken in many other thing the Watchtower teaches.

Where does Jesus comand that we don't celebrate birthdays?

There are thing greater than this that Jesus comanded. One of them is not to be competitive. Yet how many JW's are soccer, basketball fans. How many JW's were rooting for their own country in the olympics? How many were counting medals?

This are the serious issues of a Christian. Love, not been competitive.

Yet I don't see that in JW's.

Update:

JW's are more concernced about dressing, and not celberating birthday than love.

Update 2:

Ziggy, If I was to impress other people I would wear a suit.

If I wear to impress God I would have a pure heart. the last thing I would think about if I where to go to God's house is what i wear. I would be more concernced with my heart, love for others and the desire to worship him. I could wear tore pants, old shirt and old shoes. God looks at the heart.

Update 3:

Papa, what does 1 Corinthias 14:33 have to do with wearing suits?!?

"For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints."

Update 4:

Papa what does 2 Corinthians 7:1 have to do with wearing business suits??!!??

"Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God."

This is talking about purifying our hearts, no?

Update 5:

Tugstein...Im just trying to find the truth. And Im wondering about JW's, 1914 failed prophecy from the Watchtower, JW's dress code, and not celebrating birthday.

Update 6:

I know an elder that has over 40 suits...yet he and his blood brother don't get along. They have not seen each other for years. They are my cousins and I love them both.

Update 7:

Bamboo Bambi, If I wear to go to the whitehouse or a court house, I would wear a suit to look presentable to the people there. I would try to fit in with this system of things.

If I were to worship God in his house I would not care what I dress like. As long as it is decent. Decent in the senses of not showing much flesh. Kind of like muslims in a way. Im not muslim but they do cover themselfs good.

But I believe in God YHWH and Jesus. By the way Jehovah is not God's real name. It does not appear in the original texts as Jehovah.

Update 8:

james w, since when does clean mean you have to wear a suit. I could wear jeans and a nice shirt and be clean combed and shaved.

Face it, the suit this is something the Watchtower has made up? why, you look like buisness to sell magazines, books, and impress the poor so that they too would be able to dress up in suits and feel like somebodies. It has nothing to do with worshiping God with a true and pure heart.

To begin with, you make a lot of assumptions that are not true.

Jehovah's Witnesses preach in just about every country in the world. We do not all wear suits or even ties. It depends on what is considered to be suitable and businesslike in the particular culture. I am looking at our calendar right now, it has a photo of two brothers preaching without ties and without suit jackets, just pants and short-sleeved shirts.

We were not "mistaken" about the generation of 1914, we have just clarified and refined our understanding. And where does it follow that being "mistaken" about one thing means being "mistaken" about everything? Jesus' apostles made mistakes that they later corrected. Both Peter and Paul had to accept correction. Yet God continued to use both of them.

Jehovah's Witnesses are neither nationalistic nor competitive. And I doubt that any Witnesses participated in the Olympics. (The Williams sisters are not baptized Witnesses.)

Where in the Bible do you find birthday parties for Jesus or his apostles? Or for any servant of God, for that matter?

"Jehovah" has been the English pronunciation of God's name ever since the first English Bible. Actually, standard Hebrew texts are vowelized as "Yehovah." As for the earliest texts, they just have YHWH, but you can't pronounce "YHWH," it does not have the force of a name. Other Hebrew names that contain part of God's name are vocalized in English as "Jeho-" (as in Jehonadab, Jehoram, Jehoshua, etc.)

The "true Hebrew" pronunciation can be debated all day long, the fact is that English-speaking people speak English, not Hebrew, and "Jehovah" follows the history of the English Bible.

We do not sell our publications. We are not a business and we make no money in our work. Rather, it costs us time and money to do our work.

You are very opinionated (and wrong) in much that you say.

Really, you seem to want to argue, rather than wanting honest answers to your questions.

But you can't listen and talk at the same time.

It is not mandatory. Dont know who u have been going with, Apparently not Jehovah's Witnesses. But its out of respect, because they are carrying a very important message, and service the all mighty God. So yes... its out of respect. If you were to meet President Bush... would you be in normal every day clothing? Highly doubt it! You'd be well dressed and groomed because you know he is someone "important". Therefore, God is higher than any giovernment on earth

I don't like the Witnesses anymore than you, but you are blowing this "suit and tie" thing way out of proportion.

Elders with matching jackets? I never heard that.

They have adopted a dress code of sorts. So what? There are a lot more problems with the Witnesses than that.

EDIT VOT: Do they wear any clothes in Nigeria? Are the women topless? Heck, I'll go.

EDIT MOSES: Are you off your meds again? Your delusional rants are actually entertaining. How you get from suits to Iraq is very clever. Love how you worked that in.

"Coherance through connectives" isn't that the term used on the KM school? You must have missed that.

Did the questioner take responsibility for the Iraq war? I must have missed that.

    Nit picking....

    Anyhoo, I will answer.

Point 1: Many JW's thought they could not have afforded to dress up for service to our God, but it was provided. Does not matter how poor you are, you can always dress clean & have clothes that are considered 'respectable' in your area.

Point 2: NOT ALL JW's wear suits. In a hotter climate, they do not...

Point 3: The way to pronounce God's name is not the issue, it is that you actually USE that name to worship him in spirit & truth.

Point 4: B-days; 2 were in the Bible, both partyers were people that hated GOD. Both parties mentioned had deaths occur at them.

Point 5: It is aobut being able to perceive right from wrong & principles in the Bible. There are not always cut & dry rules to follow... the governments of today's world HAVE to do this, because people don't have any sense. They have lower morals & don't care about others.

The Scriptures very clearly state the Sabbaths are of YEHOVAH and there are no other faiths that command this observance which makes it set apart or "Holy" for YEHOVAH and Him alone. The Sabbaths as defined in Scripture are unique and non-existent toward the worship of any other god but exclusively for YEHOVAH our Creator. Most Christians forsake the Sabbaths of YEHOVAH and gather upon Sunday as a day set apart for a Hellenized "Jesus", so who are these Christians honestly following? Yeshua "Jesus" was a Jew who was faithful in all things concerning his Father YEHOVAH, he kept the Sabbaths as instructed in the Written Torah although broke the man-made traditions the Pharisees imposed upon the Sabbath.

2 Corinthians 7:1 talks about the need to be clean inside and out; 2 Corinthians 14:33 tells of the need to be clean and orderly. In America, being clean and orderly involves wearing suits and formal dress. In other countries, suits may not be available or normal attire, but they are in America. Why do you need to wear a suit to a business? The answer you give to that applies just as important in worship. We need to look and give our best. We cannot do that if walk in with flip-flops and shorts in casual attire. Would you walk before a earthly king in immodest attire? He would look down on you because you showed improper dignity to him. While you say God looks at the heart, your heart shows how you view being dignified in dress and grooming. If you must be clean and dignified for an important job and before officials, why wouldn't you do the same for your God? He won't destroy you on the spot, but he will see the " I don't care" attitude you display. You do not need a million dollar suit; that is what TV evangelists do. Just be clean and orderly and dignified. A dress shirt, slacks, tie, and dress shoes are not hard to come by in America. They are not cheap, but not horribly expensive.

Source(s): I have been dressing like this since I was 5 and am a JW. I learned how to be clean in my dress.

Can Vot go with you to Nigeria next time she goes?

Can we go count how many brothers at any K/Hall of your choice will be wearing Western suits as compared to other attire?

What will you buy Vot for lunch when you find that the men in Western suits are in the minority? Can I make my orders now?

It's depend on the place, I lived in few different countries in Asia and the elders never wears suit. Too hot for that. And our organization never tells us about how to dress, how long is the skirt, the hair bla, bla bla.....as long as clean and with respect according to local custom.

For example, in India it is ok to show the navel but very taboo to show their ankle. In Indonesia, you can wear shorter skirt but not sleeveless blouse. In Malaysia and Brunei, you should wear long skirt that reach your ankle and sleeveless blouse is ok. In Phillipines, the Brother can wear 'Barong' tradisional formal shirt without tie and even no need to insert your shirt.

We never sell our magazines or publications too

Who says it mandatory? besides you.

If you were invited to any Dignitaries

    home (heaven),

    office (the white house)

a courtroom, would you not dress accordingly?

You'd wear ripped jeans, and a t-shirt into court ?

Yeah, right, a Judge would have you removed.

J's W's have respect for Jehovah God,

    and themselves. And dress accordingly.

    And Modestly.

Jehovah's Witnesses are gathering in worship

    of the Sovereign Lord of the universe;

and you have the desire to 'nit pick' about something So trivial.

    "sure, wear rags, it's o.k.,

if you're a slovenly rag-a-muffin, God loves you.'

If you have the ability to dress in a suit,

then by all means do so.

After all it is men's clothing.

    If not, then clean,

appropriate* attire, and that will do, nicely.

In the Holy Scriptures there are only two recorded accounts of birth date celebrations, and...

    1. they are both done by peoples who do not worship,

nor serve the true God, Jehovah.

And 2. Murder is committed at both events.

I'd say "not a favorable report / desirable act to follow."

I like sports, alot of J's W's do.

We just keep it in balance in our lives.

    I don't watch the olympics.

    It supports and promotes nationalism.

    *appropriate attire- not ripped up, or otherwise;

so your body parts are not exposed.

not 'down to your navel' ; nor, 'up to the middle of your calf.'

    Shirts, blouses, dress, skirts.

edit: so, the other than the implication that you show more respect for a man then God Almighty, YHWH.

O.K., so I know where you stand; so to speak.

And we are in accord over what is appropriate.

    We said similar things.
