Publicy traded companies release their financial statements to the SEC every quarter. When these are made public, stock analysts pore over them to see whether the majority of companies are showing improvement, or whether their incomes and prospects are declining.

If enough companies indicated poor results, the "financials" (financial statements) will drag on the market: people will begin to sell their stock and the prices for stocks will go down as more people dump their stock. The Dow Jones index tracks the prices of some of these stocks. If the prices go down, the Dow falls.
