Taking two big dogs and 1 cat on a long road trip?

Hi

The road trip I am taking is from Texas to Virginia. Its about a 24 hour trip depending on how much or how little I stop. I have 2 big dogs. One is a year old lab/Dalmatian and the other is about 6 months old (he'll be about a year when i take the trip) and he's a German shepherd mix. I also have a calico cat. My husband is deploying in January and I'm taking this trip so I can go back home and be with my family. I love these dogs and my cat allot...and I really am scared about the trip. I've never taken a long road trip by myself...and never with two big dogs and a cat. I think my main concerns are the dogs...being able to handle them on the trip and also getting a hotel room that will allow them for the night. My other big concern is me...getting lost or something eh....I'm absolutely terrified. I was wondering about those things you can give animals to make them sleep that you can get from vets...do they really work....also if you can give any advice about the trip it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Update:

I have a four door Dodge Stratus.

It would help to know what kind of vehicle you have whether or not you will be able to put dog crates in it and even a cat crate for it.

If not the back seat for the dogs and a small cat carrier for it in the front seat.

Now when it comes to motels, plan your trip and know where you want to stop (town) and find a listing for the motels and call them and ask if they are pet friendly.

If not park your vehicle somewhere where your gang will be safe.

Just remember the leashes, dog and cat food, bowls, and a large jug of water to bring

Drugs please don`t do that to your animals.

    Good luck and God bless

I took my 3 months old puppy for long road trip from San Diego to San Francisco. It was an 8 hours drive by myself. Most of the time, the dog will sleep in the car. Try to stop every 2-3 hours for the puppy to pee and your other dog to get some leg stretch. If they are too active, then ask the vet. I know they do make medicine to calm the dog or make they sleep during the trip. It should be safe, since my friends had to do that when they took the dog to travel oversea on the plane. It was required to do so for long flights.

Also about the hotel, trying searching online for pet friendly hotel/motel. They usually only charges you a small amount of clean up fee if you bring in pets.

Check out that link, it gives some advise on how to travel with pets. Hope this helps.

Well I would stop at least every hour or two to ensure they get the potty stops. Other than that just plan, plan and plan some more! Figure out exactly how long between breaks, how far you want to travel a day and then research the area and find a hotel that allows pets. Maybe even make a reservation to be on the safe side. As far as getting lost, it may be worth the piece of mind to invest in a Tom-Tom or other type of navigation system (they'd be useful after the trip as well) if you don't already have one! Also make sure your cell phone is fully charged in case of emergency and you may want to research into any emergency vets along your route in case something happens to your pets (get copies of your pets files from your current vet before you leave in case there is an emergency, it'll give the emergency vet a little background info.)

The best thing to do is be prepared, so pre plan and map out your trip now and also get hotel reservations now so you are not driving around aimlessly. Many motels will accept dogs just search on line. Also plan on taking rest stops every 4 hours or so. You can get Ace from the Vet, it is a mild sedative. It does not knock them out but just sedates them a bit. They are still able to function and potty and everything..just helps to take the edge off and help them be less anxious.

  • defiantly ask your vet for a light sedative. so it can be as calm as possible. also, get plastic crates for them. (a cat sized one for your cat, and 2 large sized. one for each of your dogs) and what you do is grab a bunch of old blankets and a bunch of garbage bags

lay a garbage down flat with 2 blankets on it, and do that about 3 times each. to put in the bottom of the crate-so its decently comfortable and easy to clean if they have an accident (which ideally they wont) and a lot of hotels will let you bring a pet for an extra charge. if they get don't feed them a full breakfast. just enough to keep them ok until you get there.

and put a toy and a bone (not a rawhide chew) in both of the dogs crates in case they get bored) and expect to stop every few hours so they can go potty

and you may want to invest in a gps/tom tom to help you with getting there

I think cats needs to be in a crate more than anything. But sounds like they all need to be crated. Dogs usually sleep most of the time in a lengthy car ride. The problem with cats loose in the car is what if they slip out when you stop for gas. The dog can be kept on a leash so you have more control.

You've got a lot going on here!

OK, first of all....get maps and plan out your trip so you know where you're going, when you'll stop and where, and make reservations at the hotels. Here's a site with a list of hotels that will accept pets: http://www.petswelcome.com/milkbone/framelist.html

As for the dogs behaving when you stop, my husband and I travel with three dogs. (Two big, one little.) When we get out of the car, we've trained them to STAY in the back seat when we open the door. We don't tend to take them out much until we get to where we're going, which will be the challenge for you.

I would recommend keeping a leash on them, so that you will have something to grab when you open the door.

In the meantime, do some training with your "kids." Take trips in the car so they get used to it, and used to you getting in and out without them coming with you. Then go somewhere and take them out of the car, so they gets used to doing that, too.
