What ever happened to fair campaigns?

What ever happened to the days of disputing issues instead of characteristics? What ever happened to admitting that both sides are flawed rather than making some ad hoc argument that the others crazy? What ever happened to saying good luck and shaking your opponents hand? What ever happened to let mindful people make thoughtful decisions on what they like to happen in their government rather than playing mind games with voters in vain attempts to conquer little red and blue dots on a map?

    When exactly were those days?

Yeah, I know what you mean. My favorite recent example is that Democrats don't want Mark Warner to speak about unifying the two parties at the convention. They would rather he bad mouth the other side. Direct quote: "Some Democrats were already complaining, saying that Warner's job is to put a dent in Republican John McCain's image." How refreshing that a politician wants to actually rally the different sides together to accomplish something. How sad that his peers want nothing to do with it.

Campaign finance reform is required to get back to that. Right now the guy with the most money wins. If they all had the same budget, elections would be won on issues not on sound bites and advertising.
