How to get rid of a stye?
I have a stye in the corner of my eye and its really painful. I went to the eye doctor and she gave me ointment and told me to put a warm compress on it, but it's taking a long time to go away. Does anyone know anything else I can do to heal it quickly?

A stye is actually caused by a bacteria, an infection, and you may need antibiotics to treat it, but sometimes it will go away on its own. Soften the stye by applying a hot, moist compress several times a day for at lease 10 minutes at a time.
Whenever you are treating a stye, be very careful and resist the urge to pop or squeeze it! Do not rub your eyes because you can easily spread the infection to your other eye - that is unless you want a matching sett. If your stye does not go away within a week see your doctor about getting antibiotics.
Here are a couple of helpful links.

Nope, unfortunately the warm compresses are the best thing for a stye. Try not to rub it, although I know that's a hard thing not to do. Keep applying ribbons of the ointment as directed and the warm compresses. It will drain before you know it.
You also might want to replace any and all eye make up you have. They might be contaminated with the bacteria and it is possible to re infect yourself.

My gram always used a hot tea bag, and held it over her eye 15 minutes or so several times a day. This draws out the infection. Your doc can prescribe an antibiotic ointment if it doesn't go away within a week, and if that doesn't clear it up then it will have to be lanced. HOWEVER, most clear up without incident. A stye is caused by clogged glands on your eyelids. You can prevent them by washing your eyelids with johnson's and johnson's no tears shampoo. Take a warm damp washcloth and gently rub the edge of your lid, at the base of your eyelashes. Btw Tricia, most stye's go away within 3 days, so your answer cracked me up!

The over the counter medications for stye's really works. They also have pain relievers in them that will help. Try that and if you have any old makeup, throw it out and stop using it.

A warm rag and witch hazel. Wet a rag and put it in the microwave for a minute or so. Put witch hazel on it before applying the compress to your eye.

You can't really do much else but apply the hot compress and wait for it to drain. DO NOT try to pop it or anything.

You really have to wait it out. But you can use really hot compresses (as hot as you can stand it). It is caused from a blocked tear duct so no makeup.

Since when is an eye doctor not a "real doctor"? Opthalmology is a medical specialty!
