How bad is the Glucose screening test?

My doctor informed me that at my next doctors appointment we are going to have to do a glucose screening test. Just wondering if all pregnant women have to do it or is it just because diabetes runs in my family? And how gross is the drink that they make you drink? I have bad gag reflex and I'm afraid I might not keep it down.

I just had my test this morning. It's given to all women, regardless of family history, due to the fact that gestational diabetes can occur only while you are pregnant. I had mine in the fridge and that helped it a lot I think. I just got a straw and drank as fast as I could to get it over with! Mine was the orange flavor and it tasted like Sunkist. It wasn't bad at all...not horrible like I expected it to be. The drink is really the only unique thing about the test. You'll have your blood drawn exactly 1 hour after drinking it and it's just like having your blood drawn for anything else during the pregnancy. Don't worry! I have a bad gag reflex too, horrible morning sickness and I was fine!

    Blessings and Congrats!

All pregnant women have to have the glucose test done. Even ones without a history of diabetes, it tests for gestiational diabetes, which only occurs during pregnancy.

The drink it's not the best in the world, and it's all really a matter of what you can and can't handle. Some women say it's the worst thing they've ever tasted and other women say it's not that bad.

The glucose test is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It is like soda syrup, very sweet and carbonated and a bit thick. Basically they make you drink a bottle of it, I believe around 4-8oz depending on the kind. You sit there for an hour and then they take blood. Don't feel bad if you throw it up or feel nasty afterward, the nurses have seen and dealt with it before. They will just reschedule you for another time. A good tip is to go when you are least nauseous. For me it was in the late afternoon.

They should have told you not to eat or drink anything the morning before you go for the test. When you get there they will give you a small cup of a sugary type drink (tastes horrible) and you will have a certain amount of time to drink it. After you drink it, you will wait one hour and then they will prick your finger and check your blood sugar level. If it is within the normal range, you are good to go, if not, they will set you up for a 3 hours glucose screening where you will have to drink a larger glass of the sugary drink and get your finger stuck each hour after that for 3 hours. It is a normal test that all pregnant women have to get done.

Every pregnant woman has to take it around 28 weeks gestation. It's not that bad, you drink this sweet drink and wait an hour.

I failed mine (I failed it with my daughter as well) but this time I didn't take the 3 hour one, just started monitoring my blood glucose daily since I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy.

Rest assured, most ladies pass it, or if they fail the initial screening, they will pass the 3 hour glucose tolerance test.

    Hi!

I believe all women have the glucose screening test to check for gestational diabetes, so you're not alone!

(I too am high-risk, so I can't say for sure)

At the lab I had mine done at they dissolved the glucose drink in orange crush, so if you like orange crush you'll be okay.

I don't like orange crush, and I could taste the after taste of the drink, but it's only one cup full and the taste fades pretty quickly.

I just guzzled it back and tried to think about other, better, tasting things.

    Good Luck!!

It's a normal test for all pregnant women. I also have a bad gag reflex so I drank it with a straw. It was not bad at all. Very sweet. Reminded me of a melted orange popsicle. The straw helped to get it down fast and no gagging!!

every pregnant woman goes through a glucose test, whether or not you are prone to it or have a family history, some women get gestational diabetes when they are pregnant, which can lead to serious complications for you and your baby if it is not treated.

The drink isn't that awful. I just drank it real fast. But about 20 min. later I threw up and had to redo it a week later. Same thing happened at the next apt. but they went ahead and finished the testing. Don't worry about it, cuz we all have to do it.
