I just had a very similar situation with someone I was dating on and off for almost two years. Now this is what happen with me not saying its your case but something to watch out for. She kept telling me that she needed to spend more time with her son. She would cancel our dates. Then she said she was re-uniting her X and her son. Basically she was making excuses. The firs few weeks i was like ok whatever. Then it went on too long. I confronted her but she never told me. Finally one day I had enough and asked her to spill it. Turn out she told me that she didn't want to continue this type of relationship and said she was too old for this. Two weeks later she told me she was dating someone else. So she could be fed up and exploring her options.
