1992 jeep cherokee 4.0L won't start?

1992 jeep cherokee 4.0L won't start. For a couple of months, it would click once when trying to start, but would always work after a couple of tries. It finally would not start at all, but it started once after being jumped to get it home. Then it would not start at all, even jumped. The battery was tested bad, so it was replaced, but still no start. Also replaced the battery connectors. Still clicks once when trying to start it and will not even start jumped.

I don't have anything to test any of the parts, and the truck is stuck in my driveway. Is there a likely solution to what I should replace? Autoparts store said it might be the battery or the alternator... battery didn't fix it. Should I just go buy an alternator?

Thanks!

Update:

It won't start even jumped now, so it would be a pain to take it somewhere. I'd like to try and fix it myself if possible.

I can change any of the parts that it could possibly be, I just can't diagnose the problem very well. :)

Mileage? How Old is your Battery? 1; If 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 Years old or looks Swollen (Internally Shorted) on the sides replace it. If it seems good, Fully Charge it and have it "Load Tested" at 50% of CCA not dropping below 9.6 Volts during the Test, show if the Battery Will Take and Hold a Charge. 2; Have a "Draw test" done on the Starter to make sure it's still good. 3; From the Clicking ir also sounds like the Starter Solenoid Could be bad. "Check"; All Grounds, Starter to Block, Alternator to Block & Block Strap to Firewall.

I'm not a jeep pro.. But my opinion as a mechanic would be to maybe check and see if theres a clutch sensor.. Many times theres a cut off switch to the starter thats hooked somewhere in the mechanics of the clutch, pedal, or cable... They can go out and leave ya screwed. An easy fix if you find a sensor (not sure if you even have one) is to just snip the 2 wires off and use a wire connector and join them together... This will bypass the sensor and leave that potential problem out of the way...

Other than that, it could be either your ignition switch, starter solenoid, or starter. Can't be too many other things.....

Take it to a garage and they will not only check the alternator but also the starter and for that matter your new battery in about 4 minutes !

It's worth jump staring it to get there and on the way you'll be able to see if the alternator is charging the battery if you have that gage on the dash which I believe the jeep has !

the two maximum worry-loose issues of the ninety 5 cherokee turning over yet not beginning are the crank place sensor on the edge of the transmission(difficult to get at) and the %.-up coil interior the backside of the distributor. I merely replaced the %. up coil on mine and it fastened it. Unfortunatley neither one is easy to make certain at domicile through fact they are hooked as much as the computing device, yet a solid shop can test it for you and permit you realize which one is broken. Neither are fairly difficult to interchange in case you have some awareness of autos. you additionally can to get your computing device to furnish you fault codes via flashing the verify engine mild countless cases. Do a seek on jeep cherokee fault codes, and it would be common to discover an internet site with the technique and a catalogue of codes. additionally in case you get the haynes restore instruction manual it has a catalogue in there. BTW Mine has 238000 miles and continues to be going!

first..get a socket & breaker bar that fit,s the main bolt on your crankshaft pulley [ on the front-next to vibration dampener] turn engine in proper direction to insure that the engine is not seized..determine rotation by observing coolant fan..if engine is free check &clean all electrical connection,s along both battery cable,s [ positive..from battery to starter solenoid,starter...negative from battery to ground/engine block=& to frame]. then check secondary wire to starter [ small wire to side of solenoid] if all wire,s& connection,s are clean & tight..then your solenoid switch or starter motor are suspect...other possibilty,s are bad engine to frame ground,or faulty ignition switch....a 12 volt test probe would very handy in your diagnosis...good luck!
