Do you know a dance called The Shag?

At Myrtle Beach SC back in the early 60's my friends and I would drive there to the pavilion to dance and have a wonderful time. Shagging had nothing to do with sex. It was a great dance and there use to be contest of couples to see who was best. I found out just recently that shagging has another meaning. Now I feel embarressed to know that I mentioned shagging in one of my answers. Lol. I thought people our age knew this dance or was it a southern thing? Poppy

Now Poppy, you're talking my language! Shagging at the beach, nothing better. I remember the dance and no better place than MBSC!

I remember dancing the Shag. It was a pretty good dance and you had to be in pretty good shape to make it look good. I used to dance all the time and loved all the dances of the day. I had often wished I had lived a couple of decades earlier where dancing and dining were the order of the day altho' all the craziness of the 60's was quite the place to be too.

I went to Myrtle Beach years ago and I think it was the Pavilion. It was a great big place and my friend said I want you to hear this band. They are going to be famous. It was Alabama.

Yes, there used to be a pavilion over the bath house at the community swimming pool and all the young teens would play juke box there and dance the shag and whatever else was current. Think it was early 60's or late 50's. That was in downstate Illinois, a little southern, but not completely.

The last time I was at Myrtle Beach there was still a shag club there. Yes, I think that it is primarily a southern thing, but it was so popular it did spread around the country for a while. At one time there were shag clubs at all the eastern beaches from Virginia south.

Spent many summers at Myrtle, shagging and "other things" in the 50's, 60's. Ever get a foot-long on the corner?

Had never heard of it till we moved to Virginia Beach and was so glad to find it's just as popular down here in GA, too. Love it when the Swinging Medallions come to town...it's one big shag fest!

Poppy, we have a new radio station here that plays only "beach music" and it's great. I'm going to listen for that song you mentioned last night!

It must have been a southern thing because I never heard of it until the movie came out. I love that movie.

I live in Philadelphia and knew all the dances from watching Bandstand, but I don't remember the shag.

Yes, I remember dancing the shag. What fun. My husband and I won a contest once dancing the shag. We called it the Imperial in our city but it was the same dance and the contest that my husband and I won was in S,C,

I used to live in Greenville, SC (Upstate). We had shag clubs, but nothing compared to Myrtle Beach. Great dance! I think it is a southern, beachy thing.
